About Iron Lake

Iron Lake Campground is located in a dense forest along the banks of Iron Lake in far northern Minnesota. The campground is unique due to its remoteness and small size. Fishing and canoeing are its biggest draws, as the lake provides access to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. The Ham Lake Fire passed through the campground in 2007. Visitors may be surprised at how the burned area has grown back up.

Resupply of outhouse supplies would be appreciated.
Site was not well cleaned by a prior occupant.
Daytime use of a gas generator two sites down during the daytime hours was an unwelcome disturbance.
Great view of the lake. Watched a bull moose on the opposite shore for several minutes.

Great place to visit a lot of nice hikes (get list at DNR in Grand Maris) and don't mis the Chik-Wak museum.

The management could have been better for the three days we were there. Maybe it's just a result of Covid, but there was no toilet paper at the vaults and when staff came to change out "reserved" placards, they took ours away a day early. This caused several vehicles to drive into our site because it appeared available. Not the end of the world, but these are pretty basic things you'd expect them to have a handle on. We did really appreciate that it was open this summer though!

Very nice campsite. Tent spot is sheltered. Views of the lake. Some great loon activity in front of our site.
