About High Rye Cabin

High Rye Cabin is a quaint place to stay, ideally situated for exploring the northern Fleecer Mountains. An abundance of recreational activities are available in this scenic area. The cabin was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps around 1919 and is located in the historic mining district of German Gulch. It was used as an administrative site until the 1940s, when it was opened to the public. The cabin can be accessed by vehicle; however, during the fall, alternative resources may be required to reach the cabin. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities.

Stayed the night during a bikepacking trip from Copperway trailhead to High Rye and then down German Gulch trail (High German Loop). We were the first public guests of 2023 and the Forest Service had the cabin in excellent shape, extremely clean, and well stock with wood. Thank you so much for keeping this amazing cabin open to the public!

The cabin is well-furnished and well-stocked to provide a great experience. There was plenty of firewood and kindling already available. The beds have mattresses. There are cast-iron skillets and some dishes available. There are some board games available. And there are even two tables and chairs inside (including a large chair to sit in while enjoying a fire in the stove).

I stayed on my own for two days as part of a road trip. I spent my time splitting wood and enjoying the quiet solitude, which is ample there.

There's a whole part of me that wants to keep the property a secret. But the only way places like this stay available to the public is if the public actually pay to use them! Therefore, I highly recommend High Rye Cabin.

We loved this place! The mattresses weren’t amazing but aside from that, the place was cozy and well equipped with cast iron cookware and heated up quickly with a small fire in the stove. The fire pit had a nice cooking grate and plenty of room. Will definitely be back!
