About High Rye Cabin

High Rye Cabin is a quaint place to stay, ideally situated for exploring the northern Fleecer Mountains. An abundance of recreational activities are available in this scenic area. The cabin was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps around 1919 and is located in the historic mining district of German Gulch. It was used as an administrative site until the 1940s, when it was opened to the public. The cabin can be accessed by vehicle; however, during the fall, alternative resources may be required to reach the cabin. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities.

We found the cabin was left clean and in good order. The window covers were all up backwards but other than leaving large gaps it did not matter. Someone had tried to tape screen on a couple windows so flies would not come in and we just left that alone. Some children had painted rocks around the area and we also left those.
Other than a lot of large truck traffic on the road those couple days we had a nice stay.

Price increase? Book now? All other $20/$25cabins in the area have posted they will be $45+ per night next year. There was no notification of this but suspect that somebody tossed this notice at cabin. Verify with ranger office. If increase is coming book now!

Nice cabin with some views but issues.

The good:
Easy drive weather permitted in a car.

3 Bar 4G Verizon about 3 miles from cabin close to the Fairmont Hot Springs Resort.

Wood heater.

Some games.

Nice wood lodge feel. BIG porch!

Fire pit with log seats but no picnic table.

Good ADA vault pit toilet.

Dining table with 4 backed chairs if you move the table & also extra table in bedroom

Has a sink that drains.

Lots of wood.

Coral for horses.

String gate for some privacy.

2 bunk beds.

The bad:
No screens.

Very small stream nearby but filled with cow patties. No drinking or cleaning water from this source is recommended.

This is the only cabin we have rented that has a root cellar. However due to this there is moisture & wetness in the cellar that had created a mold smell in the cabin.

On top of this there is a closet in the bedroom that had a heavy rodent urine smell that people have complained about for 10+ years. Even though the USFS removed some of the wall that urine smell is till there.

With the above two issues if you are sensitive to bad smells / have breathing issues you shouldn't rent here.

As with all USFS locations the enjoyment has a lot has to do with previous renters taking care & cleaning before they leave. Sadly this unit appears to have frequent local guests who do not. The cabin had not been cleaned upon arrival by many with the sink disgusting & with foot prints in it & on the chairs. On top of this at least 10 birds perhaps grouse had been shot next to the creek & their bodies were all along the creek & in trees. On top of this animal parts were spread along the creek causing a stench.

We actually hope the price is being raised to keep the type of people who did this away!

Such a quaint little cabin and peaceful location--yet super easy to get to. I can't wait to return! Had an incredible time, and the area was just gorgeous. Appreciated the ample wood stockpiled around the cabin, too. It was very cozy and nicely kept up.

I wasn't really seeing "trails" through the surrounding forest--and I looked quite a bit--but it's possible to walk a long way through the fields behind the cabin, within pasture interspersed with large clusters of trees (if you scramble across a mucky creek and/or fencing to get back there). Maybe that's what the website meant by saying there are trails right around the cabin. Or maybe that's outdated and the trails are overgrown now. There was no signage outside or info about trails in the cabin, so it's hard to say...just mentioning that in case it could be made more clear, if they do exist!

This cabin gets high marks for its accessibility, cleanliness, location and beauty. We came from Helena, where it was 93 degrees, and enjoyed the refreshing cool temperature (it was at least 20 degrees cooler!). Also, there was lush green vegetation everywhere, which was a welcome contrast to the rest of the dry state.
The road to the cabin was wide and smooth, and the cabin was easy to find. It is well maintained and clean- some cabins make you feel certain you will leave with hantavirus. Not this one. It is bright and clean and spacious. There are two bunk beds in a separate room from the living area. There is no potable water, and the creek that runs alongside the cabin was just a trickle, and signs of cattle around it suggest that it probably isn’t the kind of water you’d want to use. The road is not heavily trafficked by locals, so it felt quiet and remote.
Just be aware that the directions on the website tell you to look for FS 82: when you’re approaching Fairmont Hot Springs, look for a little brown sign on a rustic looking road just after the RV park that indicates German Gulch and High Rye. It’s easy to miss but that’s where you turn. It’s German Gulch Road on a map, not FS 82.
