About Horse Prairie Cabin

Horse Prairie Cabin is a fairly large, two-room cabin situated on the edge of beautiful Horse Prairie in the southwestern corner of Montana. Forest service work crews used the cabin for lodging in the past. The cabin is available year-round and provides access to abundant hiking, biking, skiing and snowmobiling trails. It is equipped with a variety of amenities, providing guests with a somewhat comfortable and adventurous experience in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. The cabin is accessible by vehicle, depending on conditions. Excessive snowfall may require skis, snowmobiles or hiking for up to six miles of the route. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities.

We have been coming to Horse Prairie for 11 years now. It has served us well as a real 'out-of-the-way' place to connect with each other and explore. We did not mind when the nightly rental fee tripled a few years ago with some new amenities (12v lights replaced propane ones, new coat of poly on the floor, new stove), but the past couple of years the attention to the cabin by the forest/district has really fallen off. The volume of mouse droppings and the stench of decaying mice might be enough to have us looking elsewhere after this visit. I 100% realize this might be a product of the drastic cuts to the workforce, but it is just becoming untenable.

We thoroughly enjoyed our one nite stay. It was nice to sit out on the log benches and watch the sky. The cabin was really upscale! loved the solar lighting... we took a walk up some of the roads to a vantage point and got great views... we liked reading the log about other people's visits..

We visited in July and it was easily accessible with my subaru. The propane stove/oven and solar lights are very nice as well as the clearly new-ish vault toilet. We did see a mouse upon entering and were sure to store our food and had no problems. I absolutely loved how remote it is and the views are incredible. As other reviewers have mentioned there are 3 sets of bunk beds, so this cabin can accommodate 6 easily despite what the listing states.

My wife, daughters and I spent Father's Day weekend here. It was great! We went on hikes, saw a cow and calf moose, several antelopes, and had a fire outside and enjoyed the outdoors. We drove to a mountain lake and enjoyed some fly fishing. Overall, it was a great experience! My wife was concerned about mice, but we didn't see any mice droppings or any evidence of the little vermin, so all were happy!

Nice cabin. Road was good all the way up, plenty of firewood & propane for the stove. No water this time of year, just be sure to bring your own.
Thanks USFS!
