About Horse Prairie Cabin

Horse Prairie Cabin is a fairly large, two-room cabin situated on the edge of beautiful Horse Prairie in the southwestern corner of Montana. Forest service work crews used the cabin for lodging in the past. The cabin is available year-round and provides access to abundant hiking, biking, skiing and snowmobiling trails. It is equipped with a variety of amenities, providing guests with a somewhat comfortable and adventurous experience in the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest. The cabin is accessible by vehicle, depending on conditions. Excessive snowfall may require skis, snowmobiles or hiking for up to six miles of the route. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities.

Third year camping here and it just got better. The addition of the solar lights and the ability to charge things off the solar was amazing. Thank USFS for taking such good care of this cabin!!

The Horse Prairie Cabin is cozy and almost as described. There are 3 bunk beds (6 beds). There is a healthy rodent population with several family members spotted. Left garbage bag out during day and they got into it. The flys were absolutely horrible (we were there in October). I think they hatched with the wood stove going and they’d buzz the ceiling into the night and fall out of the sky onto you. Also, don’t look under the sink. Would also advise bringing cleaning supplies. Pretty obvious not everyone agrees on what clean is. The mop is missing and the floor was disgusting. The wood stove worked pretty good once it was adjusted to keep smoke from coming out the seams of the chimney. Plenty of firewood. No water after September. There was decent cell service with Verizon. Overall, it’s probably pretty typical of Forest Service cabins.

Well cared for cabin on a gorgeous prairie. Lots of wildlife to see! Made it almost exactly 0.5 miles from the cabin; the road became impassable due to snow drifts, but the walk up wasn’t bad at all. Definitely want to revisit!
