About Wade Lake (MT)

Wade Lake Campground is located in southwestern Montana on the shore of it’s scenic namesake lake. It is approximately 43 miles south of Ennis and 35 miles west of Yellowstone National Park. The 25 site campground, including two group sites, is situated in a dense Douglas Fir forest on the hillside above the lake. Each site is equipped with a picnic table and fire ring. Vault toilets and drinking water taps are provided in each of the two camping loops. The campground is situated on a steep hillside. For many of the sites, particularly in the upper loop, the only flat space for a tent may be in the parking driveway. There is an undeveloped natural-surface boat launch and the lake has a no-wake speed limit. Visitors enjoy fishing, small craft boating, and nearby hiking and ATV trails in the Gravelly Range. Trailers longer than 24 feet are not recommended due to small campsites, narrow roads and tight curves within the campground. Check the driveway length and width before booking to make sure the entirety of your equipment will fit the site. Snow may hinder access in early or late seasons. Cellular service may be available at the top of the hill near the Forest boundary, about 1.5 miles away.  All sites are only available through reservations. To provide reservation opportunities for those who are unable to plan six months in advance, site numbers 6, 13, 17, 20 and 25 may only be reserved two weeks prior to arrival date. Sites 2, 9, 14 and 22 may only be reserved four days prior to arrival. All other sites can be booked 6 months in advance. Each new day becomes available at 8 A.M. Mountain time.

Lots of people but the lake was fun for the grandkids. Our campsite was nice but the fire grate needs to be replaced. Lots of trash off in the weeds near the day use area. Campground host needs to do a better job.

Love this campground! We have been going for years, and had stopped due to how crazy it had gotten. Decided to give it another try since the reservation option started, and it was so much nicer! Not nearly as busy since you could see online that it was full. Very clean sites, and a helpful host.

Wade Lake is such a wonderful place to be. So relaxing! The campground host was absolutely wonderful, the best that we’ve ever seen. He was attentive, walked around checking on the whole campground and the bathrooms were spotless. Thanks

Great spot on the lake. The lake is no secret and very crowded during the day, but this spot made it easy to set up chairs on the beach and stake your spot early in the day. Very quiet and chill at night. Great birding right from the picnic table. Camp host was really nice and helpful. It was my first visit and I wasn’t sure where our spot was. The hike from the parking area to the campsite was much shorter than the 500 ft listed.

We stayed at site 6. The big pine tree blocked the morning sun which was wonderful. This spot is right on the water but close to the parking lot and bathroom. Pros of this site: proximity to water. Cons: the closest bathrooms are used by everyone who comes for the day so they are the most frequented bathrooms and the parking lot is busy and dusty. There are also a small set of stairs to get down to the site. But it’s really just a privilege to be at Wade. It is a true gem of Montana. I’d happily stay at any site.

This lake is one of my most favorite lakes in Montana. It’s tucked up in the mountains, so high elevation. Considering how remote it is, the road isn’t that bad. Swimming isn’t exactly comfortable until mid July, though I’m sure people do it before that. But even just paddleboarding the lake or kayaking is an easy way to explore it. The camp sites by the water front feel pretty private with your own little water front beach. The water is very clear and turquoise in color. Mosquitoes can get bad if the rain comes in. Even if you can’t score the water front sites, the other sites are beautiful as well. Most still have a view of the lake, though further away.

Came from highway 87 onto Horn Creek Rd, big mistake. Miles of rough road, it was raining when we drove in and my suv slipped several times. Coming from 287 onto cliff lake rd over Three Dollar Bridge is MUCH better, but still be ready for some rough dirt roads. Campsite 21 was a bit split, with car up and having to walk down to the pad and picnic table. (Did have some water view through the trees). Opted to swap for open site #10. Camp host was very nice, couldn’t have asked for better. Make sure to bring your bug spray, the mosquitoes were out in FORCE. No cell service, you’ll need to go back roughly 1/2-1 mile to the last turn out to get service.
