About Hellgate Campground

Hellgate Campground is located 30 miles east of Helena, Montana, along Montana Highway 284.  In July of 1805 the Lewis and Clark Expedition traveled through the Canyon Ferry area exploring and mapping the Missouri River. When Lewis visited the area he described it as a beautiful and extensive plain country of about 10 to 12 miles wide which extended upwards further than an eye could see. In the 1850s the gold rush hit the Canyon Ferry area attracting miners from all over the United States in the hopes of striking it rich.

We were located in one of the last camp site. Not much traffic. Quiet, kinda steep decline to get to beach/water. No algae.

The trail riding in the area is fantastic! We had a great time taking our side by side up into the mountains on the well-maintained trails.

The camp site was great, and the host was AMAZING! However, we experienced the WORST mosquitos we have ever seen and had to cut our trip short because of them. The host said that they aren’t usually that bad, so maybe there will be better luck next year!

Site #5, enjoyed the site. Remember your bug spray though, mosquitoes were pretty thick. Would like to see the pic-nic tables have some attention (level them up).

Spot right on the lake. Beeches our boat right at the camp spot. Stayed during the week so less crowded. Very enjoyable.
