About Hellgate Campground

Hellgate Campground is located 30 miles east of Helena, Montana, along Montana Highway 284.  In July of 1805 the Lewis and Clark Expedition traveled through the Canyon Ferry area exploring and mapping the Missouri River. When Lewis visited the area he described it as a beautiful and extensive plain country of about 10 to 12 miles wide which extended upwards further than an eye could see. In the 1850s the gold rush hit the Canyon Ferry area attracting miners from all over the United States in the hopes of striking it rich.

Normally I love Hellgate. It is my favorite campground. However, this trip was miserable. Since this is a campground, it should be maintained, so that all areas are useful. I understand it is outdoors and there are bugs and other critters. However, the overgrowth of the bushes has become so bad, that they house thousands and thousands of mosquitos. We literally could not use the beach area or even go out of our campers to use the camp area that we paid for because of the amount of mosquitos, we were bitten uncountable times. They used to maintain the bushes and overgrowth, so that people could enjoy the campground without losing a pint of blood to pests. If people are paying for a spot, it should be useable. Please consider doing so again, or we will have to find another favorite spot.

Our first time ever camping and we loved it and are thankful we chose Hellgate campground! Everyone around was friendly and the environment was peaceful, calm and quiet, people respected the quiet hours . Campsites are an ok size would like it to be a bit bigger but for just my family of 2 and our dog it was just right! The lake is extremely closer than expected which I loved!!! My dog had her first experience playing with water in a lake and it was awesome! Cant wait to come back! Only thing I disliked was how was it was pretty far from the town, and the potholes on the way to the sites :( other than that I totally recommend!!

The camp host was awesome. Camp site area is beautiful. Too many RVs. Needs to have a tent only area (probably the d loop) maybe 10/12 areas that are for tents. It’s starting to become not fun to camp when you Are among only RVs
