This remote cabin was built in 1908 and served as an administration building for the Wolf Creek District of the Blackfeet National Forest. The Blackfeet NF was dissolved in 1935 becoming part of the Kootenai & Flathead NF. Fairview was used as a remote work station until 1980. In 2011 major work was done to restore the cabin and put it on the rental system. The cabin is open year-round and is accessible by car.

Fairview Ranger Station, Loop: FAIRVIEW RANGER STATION
Fairview Ranger Station offers a cozy and well-stocked cabin, making it an excellent getaway in Montana. The space is clean, with functional appliances, and the surrounding natural beauty is highly praised for outdoor activities like cycling and hiking. While access may be challenging at night and there are minor cleanliness issues outdoors, guests express a strong desire to return.
Great cabin. Railroad tracks are close, but the train noise was not bad. One of the beds was a fold down chair. All said a wonderful facility and will rent again.
Very beautiful cabin and setting. The only thing that was tough for us was the strong smell of propane. We opened most of the windows to try and air it out but the smell still hit pretty hard when first walking in the door.
We did enjoy our stay - loved being by the river and the fire pit outside was awesome! Train tracks are pretty busy but didn't really bug us.
Overall a nice stay. I would highly recommend bringing head lamps, lanterns, etc. as the lighting in the cabin is terrible. We had two children with us and it was near impossible to see upstairs after 5pm. Beds were terribly squeaky, and flies upstairs were pretty bad as well, so some fly strips would be great to bring as well. It was a nice place in good condition and very clean. Also VERY appreciative that we could bring our dog! :)
So,. Many. Flies... I have no idea if it was the time of year (end of sept.) or even what kind of flies these were but thousands of them occupied the entirety of the second floor (initially, due to the sound coming down the stairs, we assumed it was bees). We opted to make a truce and secede the entire upstairs to these flies and in turn, rather strangely, they weren't terribly bothersome/didn't seem to care about us or our food. Several locals were also perplexed when we asked, and assumed a dead animal or similar had to be the cause but there was none that we could find AND they occupied the out buildings/any surrounding structures as well. This worked out for two of us just fine.
Hopefully that's a temporary or seasonal issues, looking past that it's also worth noting that your very close and up-hill to a section of train tracks in a passing area... while I don't mind and even somewhat enjoy normal moving train noises the prolonged screeching of brakes as they stop to let traffic pass (at all hours) really took away from the otherwise very nice surroundings. It would make an awesome sound effect for a horror film, though. And to be fair, wasn't constant/maybe happened 3-4 times a day so again, not something on it's own that made it unenjoyable.
At the end of our stay myself and my friend decided we'd scratch this one off our list, not exclusively because of the above issues but we also didn't terribly like the surrounding area, which was beautiful but not what we were looking for/enjoy. There's FAR better in the general area, but depending on what you're looking for this might be ideal. Oh, and just to end on a good note the toilet/outhouse was new, clean, and far beyond what we'd generally expect.
The cabin is cute, cozy and functional. It is a great location for cross country skiing in the winter or mountain biking in the spring, summer or fall.
From Libby Montana follow Hwy 37 N for 14 mi to Fisher River Road 763. Turn right and follow for 10 mi; continue straight merging onto Wolf Cr/Fortine Cr road 36 and follow for another 17 mi. The cabin will be on the left.
Fairview Ranger Station is accessible via Hwy 37 N from Libby, which is approximately 14 miles away. This highway connects to various local roads leading to the ranger station.
