This remote cabin was built in 1908 and served as an administration building for the Wolf Creek District of the Blackfeet National Forest. The Blackfeet NF was dissolved in 1935 becoming part of the Kootenai & Flathead NF. Fairview was used as a remote work station until 1980. In 2011 major work was done to restore the cabin and put it on the rental system. The cabin is open year-round and is accessible by car.

Fairview Ranger Station, Loop: FAIRVIEW RANGER STATION
Fairview Ranger Station offers a cozy and well-stocked cabin, making it an excellent getaway in Montana. The space is clean, with functional appliances, and the surrounding natural beauty is highly praised for outdoor activities like cycling and hiking. While access may be challenging at night and there are minor cleanliness issues outdoors, guests express a strong desire to return.
Great little cabin in a nice area. Nice amenities, in line with other forest service cabins. Propane throughout the cabin is a huge plus. Mice are a problem at this cabin, seeing mice in cabin upon check-in, hearing them in the walls and mice would get into the bathroom at night and eat the toilet paper. If you can get past the mice it’s a very nice cabin.
We’ve usually had good experiences with cabins, but this one had a few issues. The worst part was the bat flying around above the bed, and there was a mouse decaying in a trap (it had been there awhile but we got rid of it) , and the people who were there before us did not empty pail under sink, and it looked moldy, so we carried it out. Also, I got an allergic reaction to something in the cabin. We only used one night of our three nights that we had booked, and we never actually slept in the cabin, but rather slept in the vehicle after seeing the bat. (Bats can carry rabies so we did not want t risk it plus my allergies were too bad and I suspected a reaction to mold). Oh, I almost forgot to mention that the night when we arrived, it was just after dark and we could see that somebody was on the property and it turns out that a random bicyclist was passing through and he thought the cabin was vacant so he decided to camp there. We were a bit scared at first but then we realized that he was scared too. He packed up and moved down the road.
Positives:
It does have a very nice outhouse.
The remote location is perfect for those looking for solitude.
The cabin had a very historic vibe.
If you want truly rustic, this is your place.
It is great to get away from cell service,
A remote, awesome piece of Montana to get away. The cabin is in great shape and it's a cozy place when it's cold. You may hear a scurry and the upstairs is sparce but the kitchen and cook area is great, the surrounding area second to none. It's close to many natural resources and we can't speak highly enough about it, although we hesitate to because then everyone will want to go there.
This is a well stocked, clean, and comfortable cabin. All appliances (fridge, stove, heater) all worked. The grounds were mostly clean except the deer legs laying around. The stairs going up to the bedrooms are very narrow so be cautious!
I stayed at this cabin when bicycling through this area. First off, this area is excellent for cycling, beautiful country, paved roads (careful of incredible potholes though), no traffic, and lots of trains (yes!). The cabin was a very nice peaceful getaway. Had everything I needed for a comfortable night, just tossed my sleeping bag on the downstairs fold-out futon. Well stocked kitchen for cooking, comfy couch, big loft with 3 beds, clean and neat. Modern vault outhouse. There is a creek right in front to clean up in after a long sweaty ride and to get drinking water (for filtering or boiling to drink). Will stay there again!
We had hoped to do some snowshoeing but the snow was pretty melted, but we managed to do a nice 9 mi hike. We really enjoyed the fire pit. On our way home we stopped at the brewery in Libby for a great lunch and Kootenai Falls.
From Libby Montana follow Hwy 37 N for 14 mi to Fisher River Road 763. Turn right and follow for 10 mi; continue straight merging onto Wolf Cr/Fortine Cr road 36 and follow for another 17 mi. The cabin will be on the left.
Fairview Ranger Station is accessible via Hwy 37 N from Libby, which is approximately 14 miles away. This highway connects to various local roads leading to the ranger station.
