About Racetrack Cabin

Racetrack Cabin is a rustic one room log cabin located along Racetrack Creek in the Flint Range of western Montana, near the Continental Divide. The cabin is remotely located and was built to house miners in the 1930s. It was later donated to the Forest Service and refurbished for use by the public.  Guests will be in for a true remote cabin experience with plenty of opportunities for exploration and no distractions from cellular or internet service. There are several motorized and non-motorized trails in the area that lead to scenic lake basins and sweeping views of the surrounding area. Some of the lakes and streams in the area offer excellent fishing. Access to the cabin requires a vehicle with high clearance in the summer months and over the snow travel in the winter months. This is an extremely primitive forest road, be prepared to deal with ruts, downed trees and washouts. Road is impassible to wheeled vehicles in winter. Guests need to plan for cross-country skiing or snowmobiling 6-8 miles one-way to reach the cabin during during winter months. It is recommended that guests obtain a map and call the Pintler Ranger Station if unfamiliar with the area.

We loved this cabin! One of the cleanest and best stocked that we have been to. Located along a beautiful creek. The road is very rocky and narrow, you need a 4-wheel drive high clearance vehicle.

What a great way to get away from it all in the winter. Beautiful country and definetly quiet when you are 8 miles back in there!

The cabin is excellent. Based on past reviews it seems USFS installed a new wood stove with a glass door; fully stocked the kitchen with plates, bowls, cookware, and a propane stove; and an axe and hatchet in the wood shed. Still bring your own propane so that the canisters there can be used for emergencies. Wood was fully stocked in the shed. Kudos to USFS for all this.

For those snowmobiling in, please be respectful of the private land surrounding the access road before the campground. We saw two snowmobilers doing laps on his land, despite signs along the road indicating the area was private.

I've stayed at this cabin two times now. Enjoyed it thoroughly both times. I'd recommend to anyone to bring along a couple of mouse traps and keep all your non refridgerated(cooler) food in plastic totes. Also maybe a can of fly spray.
