About Stony Cabin

Stony Cabin is a small primitive cabin that was built in 1914 as a place for Forest Service employees to sleep while working in the area. The cabin is situated close to Stony Creek Road and across the street from Stony Creek Campground. It is not remote but ideal for those who want to stay in a cabin while friends camp across the street at the campground. It provides access to Rock Creek, a Blue Ribbon Trout Stream, and Stony Creek. The cabin is within close proximity to a variety of hiking and biking trails also. Guests can enjoy winter recreation on those same trails when there is snow in the area, typically from December until April of each year. The cabin is available all year, offering the opportunity to experience the backcountry of western Montana in all seasons. The cabin can be accessed by vehicle most of the year. There is limited parking in the driveway and trailers are not recommended. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring their own personal amenities.

The Stony Creek cabin is a charming and well-maintained retreat, perfectly situated for fishing on the Upper Rock Creek. Guests appreciate the clean and tidy accommodations, as well as the helpful camp host nearby. While access from I-90 may be challenging in poor weather, the overall experience is highly recommended, with many guests looking forward to returning.

Comfortable cabin near Philipsburg
I enjoy washing bags of gravel to find the sapphire stones.

We had a momma moose hang outside our whole stay. Very quiet campground across the street and beautiful places to walk. Well equipped and rustic cleanliness. Not super remote so be prepared for cars of neighbors frequenting the road.

Stony Cabin is in a neat area, close to Philipsburg and across a dirt road is Stony Creek and the campground. The cabin is right on a dirt road and I can't imagine that being super fun in the summer with more road traffic...dust and not a lot of privacy. The campground across the dirt road is probably a better bet unless you want a cute little cabin to hang out in. The wood stove is awesome and heats that little cabin beautifully. The cabin sits at the base of a shale slope which is quite beautiful. The better view is from the campground though.
I'm disappointed in people leaving a mess behind for others at these cabins. When we arrived it was painfully obvious the last people hadn't bothered to sweep the cabin or wipe down the table. The bowls and pans were all...gross. I would not plan on using them. There were bits of bacon and bacon grease all over the propane stove that's supplied. There were Clorox wipes right there and left... unused. It's just not the best way to begin your fun cabin stay to be cleaning up after someone else. When someone else leaves a mess it becomes your responsibility, so please just do the work to leave it nice for the next person. If we all left these places just a little nicer than we found them this system would really work well.

This was a great pick for our first FS rental experience. The cabin is in a great location if you’re looking to disconnect without having to be “off the grid”. Campground directly across the road provides a quick walk for the restroom. The road was a little busy for about 10 min on Saturday but other than that very quiet. The cabin is well stocked with firewood, a lantern and batteries, a few cooking supplies and cleaning supplies. Everything was tidy on our arrival. Very enjoyable stay, we will be back!

Cute cabin up Rock Creek. I definitely agree with the other reviews that this is not the cabin to book if you want a private, remote experience. It is right on the road across from a campground and near private residences. We were there in the winter and no one was camping, so it was pretty quiet.
Classic FS cabin with basic amenities.
