Garver Mtn. Lookout Rental

The best part of staying at Garver Mountain? The geology! More correctly, the geomorphology. Many of the rock surfaces around the lookout bear marks left by ancient glaciers - scratches and gouges made as the huge sheets of ice dragged rocks, boulders, pebbles, etc across the surface under enormous weight (technically called "glacial striations"). Just off one corner of the tower is a rock face painted by a YCC group with white paint. Look closely at this rock - you can see the many scratches that run in a different direction than the sediment layers of the rock. There's a couple of long, flat surfaces along the trail you walked in on, just before you get to the tower, that also clearly have a lot of scratches and gouges. Once you see them, you'll see them everywhere!

The outhouse really needs to be emptied. Other than that great place great shape.

Long fairly decent drive in. Lookout clean and well stocked. Stayed a couple peaceful nights. Hike up though short, is tiring carrying gear up to outlook. A little smoky in the distance. A very enjoyable time.

The reward at the top is well worth the short but steep hike. There are a couple of short waterfall hikes you can do on the way to or from the lookout that extend the adventure. Look for trailheads labeled Westfork Cascadia and West Fork Yaak Falls.

From stunning sunsets to spectacular sunrises, Garver Lookout provides incredible views amidst the boulders, trees and alpine wildflowers. Road to the lookout is in decent shape, a few bumps and maneuvering yet very manageable. Fill your backpack for the short hike to the lookout and bask in nature's glory. Two good mattresses, another on the floor, a wood stove and basic lookout supplies are present. Outhouse was clean and in good shape for early season use.
