About Mt. Baldy-buckhorn Ridge

The Mount Baldy - Buckhorn Ridge Lookout sits at an elevation of 6.5 ft in the Kootenai National Forest. This location has been used as an observation point for detecting forest fires since 1910. The current lookout tower was built in 1957. The lookout is typically available from late June through late September, and is accessible by car, though high clearance vehicles are recommended for the primitive roads. Some creature comforts are provided, but guests should be prepared to pack in many of their own amenities.

What Guests Are Saying

The Mt. Baldy-Buckhorn Ridge lookout offers stunning views and a comfortable stay, with well-stocked kitchen materials and cozy beds. However, access can be challenging due to rough road conditions, particularly in the last few miles. Some improvements are needed, such as better cleanliness and a new mattress, but overall, guests appreciate the experience and the beautiful surroundings.

Awesome tower, very clean and well equipped with some new propane appliances. Tons of deer and wildlife wandering around and so so quiet. The Kootenai rangers do an awesome job taking care of their lookouts and this one is no exception.

Great place to stay and watch the beautiful views, both day and night!
Couldn't get the pilot to light for the heater, but other than that it was a fun place to stay!

Been staying here since 2002 (except the one year year it was closed to replace the stairs).
Very nice stay.

Have been going up to Mt Baldy Buckhorn Range for almost 30 years and staying in the tower for 10 or 15 years.
Except for the awful fire year in Canada in 2018, both the day time views and the starry night views are impressive plus large and small animal sightings.
Accommodations are pleasant and the cook stove is a huge asset.
