About Star Meadows Guard Station

The Star Meadows Guard Station has all the rustic feel of a remote Forest Service cabin while still being accessible by paved road from Whitefish. Furnished with a refrigerator/freezer, range and oven, microwave, coffeemaker, pots and pans, dishes and silverware, and electric heat, this cabin has everything you need to come and enjoy some time in the Forest. Nearby Tally Lake and Sylvia Lake offer opportunities for water play and fishing and a centralized location in the Tally Lake District to access miles of hiking, biking or horseback riding trails with a trailhead right behind the cabin. Enjoy a large backyard area for family games, or just sit in front of the campfire with s’mores and make some memories. Star Meadows Guard Station is 23 mi from Whitefish on Forest Service Road #539. The road is paved and open year-round.  The Star Meadows Guard Station was built in 1941 to house Forest Service personnel and stock for the Tally Lake District. It was built to replace a 1908 building at the same location. The site operated as a work center when the Ranger Station was located at Tally Lake. In 1953, the District Office moved to Whitefish. The station housed fire suppression crews, contractors, and timber camps, and served as a staging area for engineers designing and building the roads on the District. During the winter months, the road was not plowed, and the site was inaccessible.  In 1991 a cultural survey found that the facilities were historically significant and were placed on the National Historic Register. In 2001, A Passport in Time project (PIT) funded the beginning of the restoration.

What a fun place to stay. Our family had a great time here. We are thankful for those who have worked to preserve this place and make it pleasant lodging! This is the sixth ranger cabin that we have stayed in, and it’s one of the best. It’s clear that a lot of time and consideration has gone into making it pleasant. Even the outhouse has been made into a pleasant little place. As my husband said upon arrival, “It’s like they actually want you to have fun here!”

Things we did not expect to find but definitely appreciated: dark curtains, comfortable beds, large sofa, fans to bring in cool air, puzzles, games, extra toilet paper, corn hole set, marshmallow sticks, lighters, and comfortable campfire benches. The kitchen had nearly everything you could want, including plenty of dishes and bakeware, even Crock-pots, a cast iron pan, glass baking dishes, and so on.

We didn’t expect to be able to have a campfire in early September, when there are burn bans in much of the West! But there is plenty of moisture in this valley, so s’mores were a staple part of our diet!

The basement below the house stores plenty of extra chairs and other supplies for a large group.

We were pleased to find a large, deep, cold swimming hole in the creek near the house!

The only thing we found a little challenging was finding the turnoff to Tally Lake. It’s about seven miles from the cabin. Once we did find it, we spent a lovely day there kayaking and cliff jumping. It has the best jumping-off cliff I’ve ever seen.

Another beautiful stay at Star Meadows! I love the updated bunkhouse, it would be great for a family gathering. Too cold to do much outside, we enjoyed the dining table for a puzzle & games.
