About Gordon Reese Cabin

Gordon Reese Cabin provides a modern, well-equipped place to stay while enjoying the scenic western Montana mountain ranges. During the summer a variety of recreational opportunities exist in the surrounding area, including hunting, hiking and viewing abundant wildlife. The cabin is a feature along the Lewis and Clark Trail. During the winter months the Gordon Reese Cabin and surrounding areas transform into a winter wonderland. Surrounding the cabin are 32 kilometers of cross-country ski trails for which visitors enjoy various levels of difficulty. Gordon Reese Cabin is available as a warming hut to the public during the day, meaning the renters of the cabin do not have exclusive use of the facilities and are expected to act in a welcoming manner. The upstairs sleeping area can be closed off to provide limited privacy during the day when the cabin is used as a warming hut. In the summer, the cabin can be accessed by a short, level hike from a parking area less than a mile away. In the winter, the cabin is available by cross-country skiing the same distance. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities.

I have stayed at Gordon Reese numerous times throughout the past several years. It is an amazing place to stay and for the most part well taken care of. Although there are solar lights, they weren't working which is fine if you remember to bring your own light. Lanterns and flashlights were available, but none had working batteries. We did use the propane lanterns, but one had the globe down, and the mantle missing. We appreciate the abundant amount of firewood, and the trash bags, pots, pans, etc...that are provided.
Again, a most wonderful stay, but need to stay on top of those things or add into the description - definitely bring your own lights.

This has to be the best cabin we have stayed in.
It is built to accommodate X Country Skiers but you can use it in the summer season.

You can really unwind and relax here, it is very private. There are a lot of points interest near by.

I will probably return here often

Good overall. However, no fire starter or kindling when we arrived at 1:30pm, so getting fire started was tricky. Temp about 50 degrees inside so not sure someone had stayed the night before. Solar lights were not working and D cell lanterns didn't throw much light in the basement to make kindling. Once fire started, cabin warmed quickly. Would advise to bring your own fire starter.
We used the Propane lights which worked fine. New stove worked okay. Did not need to light burners with a match which was a big improvement from last year. We did get the broiler to work, but not the oven.
Outhouse was pretty smelly, but not too unexpected for early March.
IMHO, because the price has increased from $8 to $83 per night this season, the cleanliness of the cabin overall has gone down, e.g. sweeping, filling snow water, wiping tables, filling wood box, chopping kindling, etc.
WORD Of WARNING- be prepared to dig your car out- make sure you have at least one shovel in your car. Our car was plowed in during the night, even tho we were parked on the "correct" side and there were only 2 cars in the parking lot. It took almost an hour for the 3 of us to dig it out; the worst problem was that the snow had been packed up against the side of the car, and was packed tightly into the wheels. Not a fun ending to our trip. But the weather cooperated, and was beautiful and sunny.
