About Hogan Cabin

Hogan Cabin is a small cabin located on the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail in western Montana. The cabin was built in the 1920s to provide field quarters for trail crews, smoke chasers, timber cruisers and grazing inspectors that worked in the area. It is a great retreat for snow lovers in the winter, as the cabin provides access to a variety of snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails. Summer and fall months give guests plenty of daylight and moderate temperatures to explore the surrounding meadows, peaks and valleys, as well as fish in plentiful mountain streams. The cabin is only accessible by motorized vehicle during the summer months and until snow closes the road. Guests may have to snowmobile, hike or ski up to six miles, depending on conditions. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities.

Previous users left the cabin in great condition, cleaned and well-stocked. The door/doorframe to the outhouse is completely gone. Nice view, a bit chilly. :-D

Cabin and location were nice. Booking info said firewood was provided starting Oct 1, there was none. Someone who previously stayed didn’t clean up after their dog.

It is a cute cabin set in a beautiful mountain meadow. I loved the the sandhill cranes. They were there the whole time we were and we could hear them calling.

Great cabin in a beautiful location and well stocked.

There is electricity in the cabin including 2 cabin lights and a USB charge port on the battery box between the bunk beds so you can charge your devices. The light bulb over the stove is missing its pull cord switch so it is lightly unscrewed to keep it off. All you need to do is tighten the bulb and it will come on, we didn't realize this until day two of the trip (we thought it was just burnt out). The lights were a huge plus but keep in mind they do run off solar, we were some what sparing with there use so future winter guests can have power.

The wood shed is well stocked but you can tell people have grabbed all the smaller rounds of wood leaving only giant rounds or rounds that are a little too long for the woodstove. You can make the longer rounds of wood work if you split it small enough though. Also, there is a splitting maul but the axe is broken, so you may want to bring an ax to cut kindling.

There were a few mice in the cabin and they seemed to be coming out of a hole that's at bed level of the lower bunk on the far wall of the cabin. There aren't any mouse traps in the cabin so a future guest might want to bring a few and probably not sleep in that bed.

The skiing into the cabin was good with the main Gibbons Pass road being groomed but none of the other multi-use trails were groomed. There were a lot of snowmobilers and I would recommend keeping the outer gate to the cabin locked if you don't want snowmobilers coming right up to the cabin while you're there to check it out.

If there is a full moon id highly recommend night skiing out in the meadow, the moon reflecting off the snow makes it very bright so no headlamps are needed.

Hope this review helps any future cabin goers! This is a wonderful wintertime cabin to ski into, with decent snow even during a dismal winter.

I know it’s rustic. But was kinda disappointed. My first swing of the ax and it was the broke/the head fell off. People had been using the ax head and hammer… but then the hammer broke. Most of the wood was way too long for the stove. Also, there was a warning note on the stove about bad propane and a wild left burner. I lit the right burner and it exploded in my face, burning my hands. The regulator was bad.
