About Hogan Cabin

Hogan Cabin is a small cabin located on the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail in western Montana. The cabin was built in the 1920s to provide field quarters for trail crews, smoke chasers, timber cruisers and grazing inspectors that worked in the area. It is a great retreat for snow lovers in the winter, as the cabin provides access to a variety of snowmobiling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails. Summer and fall months give guests plenty of daylight and moderate temperatures to explore the surrounding meadows, peaks and valleys, as well as fish in plentiful mountain streams. The cabin is only accessible by motorized vehicle during the summer months and until snow closes the road. Guests may have to snowmobile, hike or ski up to six miles, depending on conditions. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities.

Loved this place. Not sure what was up with the solar system, but the lights did not work. Other than that, great stay.

We absolutely loved our stay here. The cabin is lovely and well-maintained; mattresses were comfortable. We enjoyed watching and listening to the birds at dusk and in the morning, as well as hiking on the trail network that goes right by the cabin.

Beautiful location and a cute little cabin. My nephew finally fulfilled his dream of making a spear with an atlatl while we were there. We made some great family memories.

Still lots of snow! Yay! Cozy night with lots of good, dry wood and someone even set up a solar panel so now there are 2 electric lights and a box to plug your charging cord into! Pretty Fancy 🤩

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Hogan Cabin. We skied in from the Chief Joseph groomed trails, mostly level, a tad downhill or flat from there to the cabin, although longer at 6.5 miles. We had shuttled a car around, so our ski out was much shorter at about 4.5 miles with a nice gentle climb and fairly easy downhill, then mostly flat out to Highway 43.
It was a very cold day and snowed on us the entire way into the cabin, it took us 4 hours to get there as we took it slow and easy (Ha, we're a little on the older side at 65 and 60!) The cabin was VERY cold when we arrived....EVERY thing in the cabin was frozen....liquid soap, water left in pans, food left in the cupboard! There isn't a thermometer, but it was below 10. Thank you to the people before us who left plenty of wood INside the cabin and OUTside as well! We got a fire going and all was good. The woodstove works great, but could use some TLC with a fix on the cord that goes on the door so it seals.
We shoveled out the route to the outhouse after we settled in, then shoveled the looooong path to the woodshed the next morning. A sled would be handy to move wood to the cabin as the wheelbarrow bogs down in the snow, especially because the tire is flat! There is plenty of nice dry wood in the wood shed.
We had a beautiful layover day and we skied up beyond the cabin on the groomed trail to a road that contours to the south and ties back in with the Shoofly trail....about a 3 mile loop. Very nice sunny day!
All in all it was a great trip, we love the FS rental cabins! We did NOT have any snowmobile traffic, so it was very quiet.

We've enjoyed an annual ski in/stay at Hogan cabin for 30yrs. The addition of solar lights was nice (and reduced the risk of a propane lantern fire). Not sure why the USFS rate increased from $25 to $45 (plus $9 for recreation.com). Fine trip.

Super cold Friday night, Nov 11th, -15F, but the cabin heated up well. Wood was a bit low but we planned ahead and took a chainsaw. So we just cut more wood and left about 2x more than we used. Grandkids had a good time too. I'll be back to the cabin this summer/fall and I will take a damper for the wood stove and install it, it will be more efficient with it. All in all had a great time, thanks for the opportunity to rent it.

What a fun place to go spend some quiet time. A solar panel had just been I stalled so there were a couple of lights. This was an unexpected surprise and very nice!
