About Valley of Fires Recreation Area

Valley of Fires recreation area is located immediately adjacent to the Malpais Lava Flow. Approximately 5,000 years ago, Little Black Peak erupted and flowed 44 miles into the Tularosa Basin, filling the basin with molten rock. The resulting lava flow is four to six miles wide, 160 feet thick and covers 125 square miles. The lava flow is considered to be one of the youngest lava flows in the continental United States.    The Bureau of Land Management maintains and manages the Valley of Fires Recreation area, which is located four miles west of Carrizozo, NM, on US Highway 380. Valley of Fires offers both camping and day use. 13 of the campsites have 30- and 50-amp electrical hookups and water hookups, all sites have picnic shelters, tables, trashcans and barbeque grills. Two of the RV sites are accessible, as are the restrooms. Showers are provided in the main restroom/shower house. An RV dump station is also available. Two group shelters are accessible and available for rental. The 3/4-mile Malpais Nature Trail offers a close-up look of the lava surface.

Nice and quiet with dark sky at night. Walk the trail and read the information about the lava flows.

Valley of Fires was a really interesting place. The trails were clean and clearly marked. The campsite was clean and in good repair. The camphost was welcoming and helpful. Will go back when traveling through that part of the state again.

I was in unit number 3 picked it because it was near a bathroom. At 84 years I use the bathroom often. Unit 4 which is a handicap was right next to me. But the Restroom right across the street from us was closed. Long walk to the main restroom which was very nice ,but if you are handicap almost impossible.this should have been noted when I and others made reservations so we could make other accommodations.

Loved this park. Very unique. Had a great campsite and the camp host made a point of stopping by to say Hello. I only got to spend one night when passing through, but I wish I could have had a few days. I am so glad I found it and got to see this unique park.

The park is beautiful, with the unique lava rock, and the views of mountains in the distance. We saw a very nice sunset. The ranger had placed a card on our reserved site to keep it available for us. The tent pads are well-maintained, and are about 12 x 12 feet.

Beautiful expansive landscape, friendly staff, reasonably well separated campsites, short but interesting trails, immaculate showers and bathroom facilities, plus a dump station (albeit one on the wrong side of the road). Valley of Fires made a perfect one night stop on the homeward leg of our trip.

Lovely spot. Tent camped, sites are very nice and widely separated. Experienced strong winds. Will be back.
