Lower Fir is my family’s preferred campground. It has everything we need and plenty of space to spread out. Our camp host, Don, did an excellent job of keeping everything he was responsible for very tidy. Very friendly as well.

I took my church boys, ages 12-17 camping here. The campground was spacious and clean. We had room to spread out and be comfortable. The covered pavilion was a great place to hold our activities during the brief rain showers each day. There was running water available by the pavilion, which made our experience better. This was an ideal location. I highly recommend it.

From Alamogordo take US 82 east, go 17 miles, just past Cloudcroft. Turn
left (northwest) onto NM 244. Go approximately 1 mile. Turn right onto
Forest Road 422. Go approximately 1/4 mile. Campground is on the left.
Lower Fir Group Area is accessible via US Highway 82, which runs east from Alamogordo and is located just past Cloudcroft. NM 244 provides access to the campground after a short drive from US 82.

General
- Call 575-682-1518 prior to arrival to get the lock combination.
- There is no public phone.
- Fire Restrictions: Fire restrictions may be imposed at any time due to hot, dry weather conditions, at which time campfires and charcoal fires may not be allowed.
- Reserved Sites will be held until checkout time (NOON) the day following your arrival date. Sites must be occupied by the checkout time of that following day to hold a reservation or the site will be forfeited and released to other guests. Once your reservation start date has begun, neither the Recreation.gov Contact Center nor the campground manager will be able to modify your reservation.
- Refunds: Refund requests made through www.recreation.gov will be charged a $10 processing fee. This fee is retained by the reservation service contractor along with the non-refundable reservation fee. All requests for the return of the non-refundable reservation fee and the cancellation fee will be declined by the campground concessionaire as they did not receive these fees (these are the fees retained by the reservation contractor, a different entity).
- Don't Move Firewood: Prevent the spread of tree-killing pests by obtaining firewood near your destination and burning it on-site. For more information visit dontmovefirewood.org.
