Gallo Campground

This is a very tight campground if you are pulling a trailer (we were). No fires were being allowed and this changed cooking plans considerably. The entrance road coming in (at least from the south) is out and out awful, which seems a shame because the Chaco ruins are absolutely incredible to actually see. There appears to be no attempt or interest in reopening the part of the campground closed by rockslides, which is also a shame given every site was taken. They did have water, and flush toilets. The Visitors Center had all kinds of spaces set up for exhibits that they didn't even hace (just empty cases).

Overall, good experience. It could be improved.

Campground description should be much more vocal about the road conditions to access the campground. It is a ~20mi gravel unimproved and unmaintained road which is hard on all vehicles, trailer, campers etc. That said the campground itself is very nice, bathrooms are clean and well placed, and there is water available

Nice campground. I liked that there was a water bottle refill station with chilled/cool water at the restroom! Made it easier to deal with the heat. Enjoyed the short hike up to the top of the cliffs that starts right at the campground as well. But the best hike was going up to Pueblo Alto following part of the Chacoans trail to the top of the cliffs.

The spot has a great view of the cliff and is in close proximity to the bathroom. There is no shade so bring cover.

Wonderful place. Small camp ground w/ small rigs and tents. Exellent. Lots to do, see, and hike!

The campsite was amazing! Book in advance as the number of spaces are limited (a number are closed because of rock fall). There is not much privacy between pitches, but it made more of a community feel. Toilets were well kept. No showers but water is available. Pitches can accommodate a mixture of RVs and tents, we had a tent/car camping set up. In the evening take the small climb up onto the Mesa (trail head just opposite camp hosts) to watch the sun set. When the sun has gone down sit and star gaze, the sky's are lovely and clear. Campsite is perfectly placed to explore the parks hikes, in 2 days we managed all but one of the hikes and visited all of the ruins. 3 days and you could do it all. Check in at the visitors center for info. The road in is long and bumpy, we came from the north in a jeep. It was completely dry, so driving was fine, it's just tedious bumping around for 30 minutes (we are from London, UK and don't really have those kinds of roads too often!). Cars were also driving in from the north and south and seemed fine. Not sure what it would be like if it rained though, they do say to call ahead to check road conditions. The park and campsite are worth the trip, and we will be coming back.
No c ll phone service in the park.... Apart from on top of the Mesa, so another reason to take the hikes!

Chaco Culture National Historical Park is not for the faint of heart. The road is rough until you get inside the park boundary. There is no shade. However, for those of you who make it, Chaco is worth it, and it is definitely worth staying overnight at Gallo. Once the daytrippers are gone, there's this little group of people camping remotely, sitting by a fire, and looking at all the beautiful stars. Most everyone is in small rigs or tents. Quiet. Peaceful. With clean restrooms. Chaco speaks to you more if you stay a few days.

The camp host (Gary) was phenomenal! We mistakenly only booked 1 night (instead of 2) but he personally secured us a hard-to-get camp spot by looking at cancelations and personally securing the space for us. Very nice camp ground as well.
