About Gallo Campground

Gallo Campground is located within Chaco Culture National Historical Park. Tucked among the fallen boulders and cliffs of Gallo Wash, the campground offers camping in a rugged environment, surrounded by petroglyphs, a cliff dwelling, inscriptions and a high desert landscape. The area is remote with no services. Please be prepared with plenty of food, water, shade, sunscreen and cold weather necessities. Traveling to Chaco Two roads access Chaco Culture National Historical Park. From the north, Road 7900 turns off of US Hwy 550/44 three miles east of Nageezi and fifty miles west of Cuba. Continue on Road 7900 for five paved miles then turn right onto Road 7950 where the payment will continue for several miles. The rest of the thirteen miles are unpaved. From the south, turn north onto NM Rt. 57 for twenty miles of rough unpaved road. When the unpaved roads are wet (rain, snow, etc.) they can be difficult to traverse, and vehicles can become stuck in thick mud or slide off the slippery road. Please keep in mind that there is no phone service and it is sometimes difficult to get tow service along these roads. Please contact us at 505 786-7014 for the latest road conditions. Campfires in Gallo CampgroundA fire may be ignited and maintained only by using fuel sources designed and commonly used for warmth or the preparation of food, such as charcoal briquettes or natural firewood. Lighting or maintaining a fire with other manufactured or synthetic materials is prohibited.Marijuana on Federal LandsPosted: May 27, 2022, With the legalization of marijuana in the State of New Mexico, Chaco Culture National Historical Park would like to provide clarification regarding the use and possession of marijuana on Federal lands. The recently passed New Mexico State law, which allows for limited recreational marijuana use under certain conditions, has no bearing on Federal laws which continue to identify marijuana as a Schedule I illegal drug, and prohibit its use. Possession of marijuana or use of any amount of marijuana is still prohibited in Chaco Culture National Historical Park, its facilities, concessions, and campgrounds.

What Guests Are Saying

Gallo Campground at Chaco Canyon offers a beautiful, serene experience with well-maintained facilities, including clean restrooms and potable water. Campers appreciate the stunning night skies and the opportunity to explore significant historical sites with fewer visitors. While some campers noted issues with noise from others and a lack of privacy between sites, the overall atmosphere is peaceful, and many look forward to returning for another stay.

Site 15 was excellent for our 26 foot RV that was pulled by a F150 Ford. There was sufficient room, site is flat. Seeing Chaco cultural NHP was a treat—one full day is sufficient. The 14 mile drive in and out was horrible and our RV took a beating. The road was washboard ALL THE WAY! We drove at <15mph, often 7mph, and still so much damage to the rv. Broken linen closet door, valances on the floor, spare tire rack broken, and so much dust. Chaco is amazing just wish we would have parked it out on 550.

The camp ground is small but has ample room, the restrooms were clean and well maintained!! Camping, hiking, biking and discovering The history of the Canyon. Chaco Canyon is expansive and has many ruins. It is fascinating with new theories evolving as archaeologists find more pieces of the ancient puzzle. Well worth the very rough and rugged dirt road to get there. Speaking with experience, DO NOT attempt this road if rain has been heavy. There is little or no cellular service and is in a very remote location with difficult extractions if you get stuck in the slippery wet clay.

This is an amazing place to stay. Dark skies and stellar stargazing. Clean bathrooms, fresh water in the middle of the desert, sites are not too close together. You can access hiking trails on foot and there are Chacoan ruins right next to the campground.

Excellent campground with well-designed parking and tent pads, great tables, and very nice, clean restrooms, with occupancy sensors for the lighting. As an international dark sky area, a consideration would be to use a warmer type light in the restrooms and post a reminder to diminish personal lighting after dark, as well as reminding occupants that the use red lens light flashlights is better for eyes adjusting to dark skies.
