Cape Point Campground sites have a shortened reservation window. Due to the ground saturation and potential for flooding we encourage you to check the sites prior to paying. Cape Point Campground is centrally located to all of the attractions on Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The campground puts you within walking distance of arguably the best fishing and surfing on the east coast.

Visited mid-October and almost every site had standing water. We were fortunate to have a small area just big enough to pitch the tent, but otherwise it was also flooded. There is a notice regarding the issue on the website, which of course, we did not see until after booking. But then wondered why they even accepted the reservation. We were one of about 12 in the entire campground. Most others slept in the vehicles.

Campground was flooded when we arrived. We were redirected to frisco campground by park rangers. Seems cape point is often underwater since it is located in a swamp with poor drainage. Some serious improvements are needed here as this is the poorest national campground I have ever experienced.

My campsite was completely flooded! I had no where to stay. Ended up booking a last minute motel. The camp rangers called me and said it was fine and that there was someone staying there. I went over and there was no one there! No sure what's going on there. But the man said I could not get my money back. Very disappointing!

Would appreciate a follow up on this.

Extremely clean and well manicured camp ground with new-newish bath and toilet facilities. About 80% of the campsites were under several inches of water, no fault to the establishment I'm sure. Maybe we should lay off the use of fossil fuels?

Hurricane off the coast of Bermuda caused high tides along the N.C. coast. Cape Point was underwater and the road(route 12) was washed out. Calling each day said that the road would open later in the day or next day. On the last day of our scheduled stay route 12 opened but the campground was still underwater. Question now is how do we get our money back?

We stay one night there, the campground was so quiet. The restrooms were clean. The beach was amazing. The only problem was insects and mosquitos, they were HORRIBLE. The spray is not enough.
After staying in Cape point we stay Ocracoke campground. Personally, I recommend Ocracoke. You may enjoy a free ferry to Ocracoke. The security and staff at Ocracoke were better, while I didn't see any staff at the cape point.

Policies & Rules

General

  • The campground is in a low lying area that floods easily after a heavy rain. Reservations may be canceled with limited notice.
  • Camping is limited to a total of 14 days of camping between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Making reservations under another name or account to circumvent the 14 day restriction is prohibited.
  • Generators must be turned off during quiet hours.
  • Wood fires are not permitted in the campground. Only charcoal cooking fires are permitted in a grill, stove or other self-contained unit.
  • A fire may be ignited and maintained only by using fuel sources designed and commonly used for warmth or the preparation of food, such as charcoal briquettes or natural firewood. Lighting or maintaining a fire with other materials including, but not limited to, flammable liquids, garbage, fireworks, plastics, aerosol canisters, batteries, or other manufactured or synthetic materials, is prohibited.
  • There is a limit of 6 persons per site, a maximum of 2 cars, or 1 car and 1 trailer, and a maximum of two tents.
  • Pets are welcome but must be on a 6' leash at all times. Electronic collars are not considered a leash. Pet excriment must be picked up and disposed of in trash recepticles.
  • Biting insects are prevalent in the summer months, therefore netting and repellent are recommended.
  • All equipment must fit on the site pad; large RVs over 25 feet may have to park second vehicles in auxiliary parking away from the campground, or purchase an additional campsite. Vehicles cannot park on the grass.
  • All campsites are exposed and subject to weather extremes. There are no shaded sites in the campground.
  • The Access Pass and both the Senior Annual and Senior Lifetime Pass are the only passes that provide a discount on the fee for the campsite physically occupied by the pass owner, not to any additional campsite(s) occupied by members of the pass owner's party. The discount does not apply to utility hookups. The pass discount must be applied at the time of the reservation; it cannot be applied retroactively.
