Oyster Point Campground

Love the quietness of this campground.

My friend (Also female) and I arrived late due to work and traffic. We set up quickly and headed to bed. Not more than 5 minutes after laying down we heard footsteps. Then I saw the flash of a camera. The footsteps got closer and there was a horrendous smell. We could hear someone breathing outside the tent. The footsteps continued around the premises. Then we saw more camera flashes that seemed as thought the person was trying to take photos in sync with the heat lightening, but there was an obvious difference in flashes. We called Carteret County sheriff’s and requested that they send someone out. As we were on the phone, the person continued to take pictures. A friend who was in the next county over kept in contact with us while we waited. The deputy arrived about 20 minutes later. Upon his arrival he looked around the campsite and noticed ab bag at the outset of the bushes. He asked if it was ours and it wasn’t, nor had it been there when we arrived. The deputy retrieved the bag and it smelled the same way the smell we had smelled did. It was rancid shrimp. However, when it was near the bushes, we couldn’t smell it, that’s how close the person was to the tent, in addition to being able to hear him breathe. The sheriff waited for us to pack our things and we left immediately. We were not given any specific contact information for the campground and when we tried reaching out to recreation.gov we had to wait nearly 4 hours for a response and then were told we had to wait until the date of checkout passed. I send a refund request since we felt forced to leave and terrified of staying. That was 6 days ago and I’ve received no communication. I am beyond disappointed and angry. We were in danger and dismissed by the organization.

Wonderful, friendly camp hosts and beautiful, private sites. What more could you want? We stayed in site 5 and it was great for hammock and tent camping. I might also recommend site 9 as it has a direct path to the water. Enjoy!

Simple no frills location. The sites were nicely secluded and had tables and fire rings.

The campground itself is very clean. The host that was there the night we stayed was friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. My only complaint is that the ground is as hard as a brick. On top of that, thick layers of gravel have been used at the camp sites. I bent most of my tent stakes trying to hammer them down into the hard ground. Also, make sure you bring a good footprint if you’re tent camping, to prevent the rocks / gravel from punching your tent.

The only problem was the mosquitoes. That they can't control.
