I enjoyed a relaxing night at the Ocracoke campground. The winter is a quiet time to be in Ocracoke. I think there were only three other campsites occupied the night I was there. My campsite was just on the other side of the dunes from the ocean. What a wonderful way to go to sleep - listening to the ocean. The campsite was very clean. I was tent camping and there was a nice level space to put my tent. The site had a nice picnic table and a grill. I was a short walk to the heated bathroom which was pretty clean. The only source of drinking and cooking water (that I could find) was at the water fountain by the bathrooms. The showers were closed for the season. There is a bike path that runs from Ocracoke Village to the the campground so getting back and forth the village is safe and easy.

We had a great time at this National Park campground!! First time we've been on the island in January and we took advantage of a less crowded village. The campground is very clean, well kept with a paved and level site makes a lot of full hook up campgrounds look pale in comparison. The staff was very friendly and well informed. A quick walk to the beach and a ORV ramp right next to the campground made it easy to take the truck out for a day of surf fishing. We will definitely be returning to this campground!

It is lovely on the island in the middle of winter. It is just a bummer that there the showers are off at the campground.

Site was very clean on our arrival and level enough to use without blocks. The restrooms were clean as well. Campground is in excellent location with good beach access. It was very quiet and Rangers cruised thru regularly. This is one of our favorite places. we were in 25" Class C.

In December it was 98% open. In the off season when it's very open, I recommend going in first, finding a spot you prefer, then go online and reserve.
Some spots are wide open, some have more tall bushes for side privacy.
Bathrooms are very clean, potable water quality at the dump/ fill site is very good.
Spots are all paved, no utilities. Showers are cold water only, and turned off in the winter.
4 miles to town, there's a nice brew pub and a few restaurants still open, and a pretty nice grocery / general store, hardware store, and more businesses that are likely open during the peak season.
My NPS pass had the campground cost at $14 per day.
There is a commercial campground right in town, but I think they wanted $80 per day! Didn’t look that good either.
I stayed 2 days then took the ferry to Cedar Island.
The Oregon Inlet campground would be good to check out as well, and I believe has site utilities and year round showers.

Very nice campground. They do have water and a dump station but it is not located in the campground and couldn’t find any info on where it was. I tried to locate the camp hosts before I set up but was unable to find them. On the way out I saw it. It is located across and down street from the park

We really enjoyed camping at the NPS campground at Ocracoke. Ironically, though, our most glorious day (no wind with temps nearing 70 degrees) after a sunset dip in the ocean and walk on the beach, was the least comfortable, once the sun got low and we were cooking on our Coleman. MOSQUITOES!!!! Yikes, there were swarms. Plus, once in the tent, I realized that some sort of sand insect (maybe? since they didn't look like mosquito bites) had covered my ankles with little red spots. I was surprised they didn't itch, though quite frightening to see! Don't mean to turn anyone off, just a warning that you want to be prepared with bug spray. That said, the following nights, the temps dropped into the 40s-50s and a strong breeze solved the skeeter discomfort. After a mosquito massacre purge of our tent the morning of day two, we slept like babies for three more nights. No hot water and no electricity or water at the actual campsite, but clean bathrooms (and cold showers for the brave!) We wished we had thought to bring an extension cord to use the outlet in the bathroom for boiling water in our electric tea kettle easily, but the Coleman stove did the trick. An especially affordable stay if you have a senior park pass! :^) Highly recommend especially off-season for a nature retreat so near the ocean! Just be aware that there aren't many shops open on the Island. We're happy campers!
