Love Cataloochee...it's on the quieter side. But watch out for the elk. One of them was determined to make off with my camp chair. Another camper came to my rescue & was able to shoo the elk away.

Fantastic campground! We've enjoyed camping at Cataloochee for ten years, it's a smaller campground with only basic facilities but the hiking and the wildlife are great! You could expect to see elk, turkey, lots of birds and an occasional bear. The drive in isn't for the faint of heart, just go slow.

Fantastic campground! We've enjoyed camping at Cataloochee for ten years, it's a smaller campground with only basic facilities but the hiking and the wildlife are great! You could expect to see elk, turkey, lots of birds and an occasional bear. The drive in isn't for the faint of heart, just go slow.

We've been camping at Cataloochee for years, so the unpaved section is not a surprise, but the condition of the road was. It did not seem that any work had been done to reduce the washboards and potholes in the road. This does need some attention, as it will only get worse. The only thing that kept me from scoring this as a 5 star was the condition of the road. Everything else was great, especially loved getting to see one our favorite campground host, Janet.

From I-40 take Exit 20 in North Carolina. Turn right onto Cove Creek Road and follow to the Park boundary. The road goes from pavement to gravel to pavement. Upon reaching the pavement the second time, turn left. Go 2.5 miles to an intersection and continue another .5 miles to the left.
Cataloochee Campground is accessible via I-40, with Exit 20 providing the nearest access point. From the interstate, travelers can reach the campground by following Cove Creek Road to the park boundary.
