Cottonwood campground is a great place to see bison, and wild horses. My stay was early in the season so the water wasn't turned on yet. The vault toilets were clean. The campground is 5 miles from the entrance and the town of Medora. There are restaurants and a general store in town where you can purchase gas. If you are visiting in early May the leaves on the trees may not be out so there is no shade. The sites are well-spaced and several are pull-thru for larger campers. The south loop is more for tent camping. The sites at the far end of the north loop are a walk from the bathroom. The vault toilet is closer to the check-in kiosk and site 5. Site 23 has a wonderful view across the Little Missouri river and bluffs. Bison frequent the area and meander through the campground often lounging in the sites and rubbing on the picnic tables and BBQ's.

We camped in space 47 the first weekend in May which backed up to the river. The wildlife was out everywhere. I thought maybe it was because it was early in the camping season (less people). Our site was perfect. The day we arrived, the wild horses were right across the river by late afternoon and were there for a couple hoursβ¦as were the bison! For a couple nights we heard coyotes, owls, and wild turkeys. We did have a bison graze right through our site but we stayed quiet and let him go on by! What an experience. Just need to always remember give them roomβ¦even if you are sitting in your tent! Donβt get up for a photo op! Stay put and quiet. Even tho the loop through the park didnβt go all the way around due to the coal vein fire, there was still a lot to see and the trails were not crowded. We were there for 4 days & 3 nights and that was perfect. We will be returning for sure! Hopefully when the musical is open for the season!

Never had a bison as a camper next door. What a great experience.

This was a great site. We had a pop-up camper with a slider and it fit well. Close to the bathrooms, which were clean but bring a towel to dry your hands.

Excellent value. Nice site with a flat spot for a tent. One of my favorite campgrounds on my two month national park road trip.
