About Drake Peak Lookout

Located on the crest of the Warner Mountain Range at an elevation of 8,222 feet, Drake Peak Lookout hugs the wind-swept land surrounding it, offering unparalleled views into Oregon, California and Nevada. The lookout was built in 1948 and has served as a fire detection site for the surrounding area. Historically, Forest Service personnel lived long seasons in the cabin, scanning the region for lightning, flames, curls of smoke or any other indicator of possible forest fires. At one time, hundreds of these types of lookouts were in service throughout the Pacific Northwest. Today the lookout provides a unique lodging experience for guests seeking recreation and relaxation in the Fremont-Winema National Forest. Although the lookout offers some basic amenities, for guests to enjoy their experience completely, they must bring several of their own supplies.

What Guests Are Saying

Drake Peak Lookout offers breathtaking views and a peaceful, secluded experience, perfect for exploring the surrounding area. Many guests appreciated the stunning sunsets and starry nights, along with the new bathroom and functional gas stove. However, the lookout is in need of maintenance, with issues like broken windows and a drafty structure, which can detract from the overall enjoyment during inclement weather.

Had a great time staying here - gorgeous views and plenty of space for wandering around. A window needed repair but it didn’t affect our stay other than being a bit of an eye sore. We’d definitely come back!

Southerly weather fronts came in day after day. The lookout flooded with water leaking in through the windows and ceiling. South window frames are rotted and bow in with the wind gusts. When conditions are nice, the location is unbeatable. When inclement, the lookout really shows it's age/disrepair. Wood stove struggles to make it warm when the temp is below 40, heat just flies up the stove pipe. Lookout is drafty in strong winds. Siding is bowing/bug infestation. Amazing views though.

I have stayed a Drake a lot over the years and it's really near end of life/in dire need of maintenance. Bathroom is new and in great shape.

Endless amount of amazing stuff to explore around the area, on foot out the front door, or within 15 minutes drive, or further. Substones, hot springs, petroglyphs, trails, fishing, birding, etc.

Stayed at Aspen Cabin then Drake Peak, got to check out some cool Petroglyphs near Adel. As others have commented there is a window that’s broken out but is patched very well at this time. Lookout holds heat well. We took care of the flys immediately upon arrival and they never bothered again. Be aware only 1 Cot is in functional condition. We found one damaged outside. Great Locals, Hunters and Views!

Door doesn’t stay shut. But I still loved the solitude. One of the cots has a big rip in it.

The good - The views are spectacular. We had really good weather, stayed for 3 nights. Very peaceful. The sunsets/sunrises were amazing! Star gazing - amazing. So many butterflies during the day! The gas stove was great! The cabin ( while does need some maint., was great). The outhouse was fully stocked & clean!
The Bad - the cabin needs some attention- broken windows, gas lights inop, kinda rough! Flies & more flies. - they will get into the cabin by the dozens due to the lack of maintenance on the cabin.
Overall we had a great 3 nights at the lookout. I would recommend it to anyone. Just wish they would do some maintenance on it.

Unfortunately, it was too windy to enjoy our stay. I wear glasses and the wind was so strong it I was blowing them off my face.
Other than that, it was a very beautiful view as long as we stayed inside we were ok.

Super cute! Lots of flies though and had some mice come out at night in the cabin which was creepy.
I also had a group of guys come up to the lookout (5 trucks), one guy came up from behind the lookout out of nowhere which was really annoying since I had a dog running around.
Please be mindful of there is someone staying in fire lookouts. We go for peace and quiet and don’t want to see other people!

A beautiful location. It’s too bad the structure is falling apart. There is not much upkeep going on around here. The place won’t be standing much longer at this rate.

Very fun experience. It was so quiet and secluded, and hiking around provided amazing views. We only stayed two nights, but it was completely worth it.

Beautiful views and a great experience! This lookout is one of the easiest to drive up to among the 18 I have stayed at. However, since the lookout is worn and showing its age, there are a few things to consider. It's best to bring your own lights, as one of the propane lights is broken, and there were no mantels (standard ones should fit if you're coming soon).

Please be aware that, like most lookouts, the windows don't fit closely, and there are no screens. To address this, bring some blue painter's tape, which can serve two purposes. First, if bugs are bothersome, you can use the tape to plug holes and remove it before you leave. Second, you can order cheap screen material and tape it with the blue painter's tape over the windows during your stay so you can open the windows, and then remove it when you leave!

Despite these considerations, it's still a fantastic spot to stay, offering stunning views and a memorable experience.
