About Drake Peak Lookout

Located on the crest of the Warner Mountain Range at an elevation of 8,222 feet, Drake Peak Lookout hugs the wind-swept land surrounding it, offering unparalleled views into Oregon, California and Nevada. The lookout was built in 1948 and has served as a fire detection site for the surrounding area. Historically, Forest Service personnel lived long seasons in the cabin, scanning the region for lightning, flames, curls of smoke or any other indicator of possible forest fires. At one time, hundreds of these types of lookouts were in service throughout the Pacific Northwest. Today the lookout provides a unique lodging experience for guests seeking recreation and relaxation in the Fremont-Winema National Forest. Although the lookout offers some basic amenities, for guests to enjoy their experience completely, they must bring several of their own supplies.

What Guests Are Saying

Drake Peak Lookout offers breathtaking views and a peaceful, secluded experience, perfect for exploring the surrounding area. Many guests appreciated the stunning sunsets and starry nights, along with the new bathroom and functional gas stove. However, the lookout is in need of maintenance, with issues like broken windows and a drafty structure, which can detract from the overall enjoyment during inclement weather.

This is one of the nicer fire towers we’ve stayed at. The wood stove keeps the place cozy (just remember to bring plenty of wood). The kitchen area is well stocked. The views are truly amazing.

This was a once in a life time opportunity. Went in the beginning of October so it was a bit cold (and very windy) but the wood stove kept us feeling toasty. Spent our days adventuring to the nearby peaks and spent our nights star gazing, incredible you can see the milky way! The sun sets and sun rises were absolutely stunning, worth getting up early for. There is a nearby water refill station but it was closed when we went (again early October) so luckily we had brought enough water. This was our first time staying in a fire lookout and will not be our last.

My wife and I had a great time. It was cold and windy (10/9) but when the sun was out the room got really warm. Full sky, sunrise-sunset. 1st night saw UFO...no really. Saw pulsing orbs in SE at maybe 10,000'(we're at 8,000) moved to south in blink of an eye, then SW, and were chased off by 2 military jets. Entire event took less than 15 seconds. Did not come back second night. Other than that we had a peaceful time. The door does not lock so we moved table in front of door. Wood heater is a wood eater, but kinda heats the space.
