Tyee Campground - Oregon Dunes

I love the camp ground. We have spent years comping there. With no camp host this year wasn’t pleasant. Forestry staff were nice but the campground was full and both bathrooms were always out of tp. I rented 4 camp sites. This is the first year I’ve been disappointed

We were looking for a quiet campground, and though this was close to Highway 101 the activity at the campground was nice and quiet. However our site was unbelievably close to the site next to us with no trees or bushes for any separation/privacy. There were three sites in a row: 8, 9, and 10 like this. Maybe if it was just two sites it wouldn’t of been so bad, but since all three were occupied it was pretty uncomfortable. I won’t stay at this campground again.

There is only one set of M/F vault toilets for this campground, and this is insufficient when the campground is full, which it was on Mon. July 26, and apparently was over the preceding weekend. It appears the toilets were not serviced over the weekend, as there was no toilet paper available on that Monday! The USFS did not arrive at the campground until about 3pm on Monday! Afterwards, the men's toilet was locked later that afternoon, somehow, until someone forced it open with a screwdriver. The campground layout is poor regarding privacy as several sites along the river are open to each other. This important detail is not available from the USFS or recreation.gov, so one cannot choose a site based upon this info. There was no volunteer host, and that site was closed. We appreciated the maps posted at the boatramp, however the one describing the floating toilet on Siltcoos Lake was incorrect, as the toilet was not found at the specified location on that map.

One guy was squatting without a reservation at a reserved site, left when the party with reservations arrived, then but came back the next morning with a huge pile of firewood and built a huge smoky bonfire next to the party with reservations, then left without extinguishing it. The campground does have a good kayak/canoe launching area to explore the Siltcoos River Canoe Trail which is really great except for the horrible ORV noise pollution in the lower stretch below the dam. ORVs need to be removed from this section of the coast next to the Snowy Plover refuge, in my opinion.

First, the good: 1. I was able to reserve a spot here late in a very busy day along the Oregon Coast and did not have to sleep in my truck. 2. The site was relatively flat. 3. My tent stakes went into the ground easily.

Now the rest: 1. The site is literally within a few dozen feet of Highway 101, the main drag through Siuslaw. Highway 101 does not observe quiet hours. I am grateful to learn though that I am not the only driver to routinely hit the rumble warning strips on the edges of the road lanes. 2. The sites are all pretty close, but 8, 9 and 10 are more like a group site. 3. The dumpsters were overflowing.
4. Behind the sites is a nearly fetid body thing f water. 5. A previous site occupant dumped what appeared to be kitty litter in the weeds behind the site.

This should be your last resort at Siuslaw.
