About Pickett Butte Lookout

Perched atop Pickett Butte at an elevation of 3,200 feet, this lookout offers visitors a unique lodging experience in Umpqua National Forest in southwest Oregon. After climbing 40 feet up on a very narrow steep stairway to the one-room structure, guests are rewarded with panoramic views of the entire Jackson Creek Drainage and much of the lower elevation lands around the town of Tiller. The original lookout was 25 feet tall and built in 1934. In 1948 the tower was replaced with the current flat top structure. The tower is available for reservations October 15 through July 15 (lookout is utilized for fire season during the summer months). The roads to the lookout are not plowed, nor are they maintained for passenger cars. High clearance or four wheel drive vehicles are recommended for travel to this site, and guests must bring several of their own amenities. Please be aware that while very uncommon, during winter months guests may need to snowmobile, ski or snowshoe up to four miles to reach the lookout.

What Guests Are Saying

Pickett Butte Lookout offers a stunning and serene experience with beautiful views, especially at sunrise and sunset. The well-maintained forest roads make the approach easy, and the unique dumbwaiter adds convenience for transporting supplies. While the steep stairs can be challenging and the oven was out of service during some visits, the overall ambiance, local wildlife, and opportunities for adventure make it a highly recommended destination.

Poison oak and ticks everywhere. Bring lots of water. Views are phenomenal! Mattress is surprisingly comfortable, fridge and oven/stove work very well. We only had phone reception when in the tower

Mouse poop everywhere: inside and outside. After traveling 250 miles to get there we left after an hour. Extremely disappointed no previous renters had called it in to the Ranger Station. Our 3 night stay was useless.

Lookout is sparse, but clean. No electricity. Would be nice to have solar to at least provide charging for electronic devices.
Need to post instructions for the propane lanterns.

The guests before us broke a window and left broken glass all over the lookout. They also did not follow the instructions for leaving the pilot light on in the heater. Other than those items the lookout was in pretty good shape and clean. There was almost no snow at the lookout.

As of 1/23 you could drive to the lookout with a subi crosstrek without troubles. Woke up above the clouds both days, stayed plenty warm, and all appliances were working. Great lookout!

Just FYI: There are few pans, and one small pot. The stairs are very shallow and steep, and I used my hands to help get up. You need to know this if you're thinking about bringing a dog you can't carry. The logs at the lookout stated that multiple larger dogs couldn't make it down the stairs and put their people in a pickle. According to the logs there were lots of ticks in January, but we stayed on the road mainly and didn't have a dog and we didn't get any.

We had a two day reservation for pickett butte and we were very happy with our stay. We were slightly worried about snow but that was no problem. I don’t think this LO gets snow often. We loved the propane amenities. Stove, oven, lights, and heater worked great! We didn’t try the fridge. The steps were very steep and icy in the mornings. Crater lake is a 2.5 hour drive away. We had enough service to check the crater lake cameras to see it was clear and decided to make the drive. The road to the LO has got to be the quickest and easiest LO road I’ve ever been on. No need for high clearance IMO. The LO has a pulley which was a lifesaver, but we did have to bring up the cooler by stairs. The outhouse isn’t too bad. Please don’t poo on the ride of the road below the lookout. Someone did right before us and it’s really not necessary. The outhouse is fine. At least hide it or bury it.

Category About
General

Maximum capacity is four people (due to weight limits on the tower)

General

There is no water at the site

General

This site is not recommended for families with small children; the high steep tower stairway, catwalk access, and potential for inclement weather pose significant risks for injury if not careful.

General

The tower is secured with an overhead hatch door which may be difficult to open; please use caution when opening and closing this door, and keep the door closed while in the lookout

General

Entry to the lookout is by combination lock. The combination will be included in your reservation confirmation letter. To open the lock, set the combination to the correct code and squeeze the lock shut, which will allow it to then pop open. Vehicle access past the road gate is permitted with your reservation, but other users may hike from the gate to the lookout during your stay. Placing personal locks on the gate is not permitted as agency personnel may need to access the site.

General

Please leave the lookout cleaner than you found it. Due to the remote location of the lookout, it cannot be cleaned after every stay. Do not leave food, bottled water or cans/bottles (these can freeze and burst between guests) in the refrigerator when you leave. Do not leave food out where it can attract animals. Keep the building and grounds clean to deter squirrels, mice, rats, and bears. Please leave the refrigerator on when you leave and clean it out thoroughly.

General

The lookout tower is a no-smoking facility

General

Storms are part of the thrill of staying at a lookout, but they are also extremely dangerous. If a lightning storm should occur while you are at the lookout, please follow these rules: Stay indoors or in your car If you are trapped outside during a lightning storm, move to lower ground and stay low to the ground. Do not stand under trees or other high objects. If you are in the lookout building, close windows and doors. Turn off radios and not touch anything metal, the lookout itself is 'grounded'.

General

Visitors must pack out all trash. Please be respectful of other visitors, and be aware that leaving trash out can attract rodents and other animals. There is a transfer station off County Road 46 at milepost 4.5, but it is only open on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and a fee of $3.00 per can (up to 35 gallons) is charged.

General

Inclement weather can occur during any time of the year, but during winter months snow storms can make the lookout unreachable by vehicle. Depending on snow-pack, the lookout can usually still be accessed with a high-clearance vehicle with four-wheel drive and/or tire chains, but be aware that there are times that the lookout can only be accessed by snowshoeing, skiing, or snowmobiling up to 3 miles one-way. Refunds are generally not given for inclement weather.

General

Renters are advised to bring cleaning supplies to clean interior surfaces upon arrival and departure. The Forest Service will provide cleaning supplies but cannot guarantee their availability in the case they have been used or taken by previous occupants. Renters assume responsibility for cleaning surfaces to reduce the risk of potential COVID infection. If unwilling or unable to use cleaning supplies, renters can avoid going to the rental and submit for a full refund.
