Lookout is sparse, but clean. No electricity. Would be nice to have solar to at least provide charging for electronic devices.
Need to post instructions for the propane lanterns.

The guests before us broke a window and left broken glass all over the lookout. They also did not follow the instructions for leaving the pilot light on in the heater. Other than those items the lookout was in pretty good shape and clean. There was almost no snow at the lookout.

As of 1/23 you could drive to the lookout with a subi crosstrek without troubles. Woke up above the clouds both days, stayed plenty warm, and all appliances were working. Great lookout!
Just FYI: There are few pans, and one small pot. The stairs are very shallow and steep, and I used my hands to help get up. You need to know this if you're thinking about bringing a dog you can't carry. The logs at the lookout stated that multiple larger dogs couldn't make it down the stairs and put their people in a pickle. According to the logs there were lots of ticks in January, but we stayed on the road mainly and didn't have a dog and we didn't get any.

We had a two day reservation for pickett butte and we were very happy with our stay. We were slightly worried about snow but that was no problem. I don’t think this LO gets snow often. We loved the propane amenities. Stove, oven, lights, and heater worked great! We didn’t try the fridge. The steps were very steep and icy in the mornings. Crater lake is a 2.5 hour drive away. We had enough service to check the crater lake cameras to see it was clear and decided to make the drive. The road to the LO has got to be the quickest and easiest LO road I’ve ever been on. No need for high clearance IMO. The LO has a pulley which was a lifesaver, but we did have to bring up the cooler by stairs. The outhouse isn’t too bad. Please don’t poo on the ride of the road below the lookout. Someone did right before us and it’s really not necessary. The outhouse is fine. At least hide it or bury it.

Important note regarding GPS use: please be advised that GPS units can, and have sent guests down the wrong roads to access the lookout. Please consider following the directions below rather than your GPS unit.
Directions: From Canyonville take West 1st Street and turn onto SE 3rd St/OR-227. Continue to follow OR-227 approximately 23 miles until you reach Tiller. From Tiller take Douglas County Road #46 for 3 miles to the Pickett Butte turn off which is marked as Forest Service Road #3113 (on the right across the bridge). Follow Forest Service Road #3113 approximately 5 miles up to the 300 Spur Road sign (#3113-300). Take the 300 Spur Road up to the lookout (2 miles). The road to the lookout is not snow plowed.
Please use caution during winter months. Pickett Butte's elevation is 3,200 feet and does receive snow. The road to the lookout is not plowed. While very uncommon, during winter months guests may need to snowmobile, ski or snowshoe up to three miles to reach the lookout.
Access to Pickett Butte Lookout is available via OR-227, which can be reached from Canyonville. The lookout is approximately 23 miles from Tiller, accessed via Douglas County Road #46 and Forest Service Road #3113.

Policies & Rules
Cancellation policy
- Reservation fees are non-refundable. For campsites, cabins, lookouts, yurts, group sites, and similar stays, we charge a reservation service fee of $8.
- Standard cancellations usually have a $10 cancellation fee. Customers can generally cancel before the check-in date online.
- Late cancellation rules differ by stay type.
- Individual campsites: cancelling after 12:00am local time the day before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- Cabins, lookouts, and yurts: cancelling less than 14 days before arrival usually means a $10 cancellation fee plus forfeiting the first night's fee.
- One-night reservations: a late cancellation usually forfeits the full amount paid, up to the total original reservation cost.
- Modifications are allowed before the cut-off window, but fees depend on the change. Changing to dates completely outside the original reservation dates may trigger a $10 change fee. Extending or shortening a stay that still includes original dates usually has no change fee, though refunds may depend on timing and facility rules. Switching to the same type of campsite for the same dates usually has no change fee, but price differences are charged or refunded.
- Early departures may or may not be refunded. At certain facilities, partial refunds may be possible if staff can mark the site available for other visitors. No refund is given for a night if the early departure is requested after that day's check-out time.
- Security deposits are separate. Security deposits may be refunded to the original payment method if the facility is left in acceptable condition, as determined by the property.
Site capacity
- The lookout can accommodate up to four people due to weight restrictions.
Utilities
- No water supply is available at the lookout site.
Safety & rules
- Families with small children should avoid this site due to safety risks from the tower.
- Use caution when operating the overhead hatch door of the tower and keep it closed.
- Smoking is not allowed in the lookout tower.
- In case of a lightning storm, stay indoors and avoid metal objects.
- All visitors must pack out trash; a transfer station is available nearby on Wednesdays for a fee.
- Lock doors and windows and remove personal items before leaving.
- Bring cleaning supplies for your stay; refunds available if unable to clean.
Vehicles & parking
- Access the lookout with a combination lock provided in your reservation confirmation; personal locks are not allowed.
Wildlife & food storage
- Clean the lookout before departure and do not leave food or trash that might attract wildlife.
Fires & fuel
- Do not move firewood to prevent the spread of invasive species in forests.
Pets
- Keep pets leashed to protect wildlife and plants.
Accessibility
- During winter, access may be limited due to snow; refunds are not issued for inclement weather.
