About Pickett Butte Lookout

Perched atop Pickett Butte at an elevation of 3,200 feet, this lookout offers visitors a unique lodging experience in Umpqua National Forest in southwest Oregon. After climbing 40 feet up on a very narrow steep stairway to the one-room structure, guests are rewarded with panoramic views of the entire Jackson Creek Drainage and much of the lower elevation lands around the town of Tiller. The original lookout was 25 feet tall and built in 1934. In 1948 the tower was replaced with the current flat top structure. The tower is available for reservations October 15 through July 15 (lookout is utilized for fire season during the summer months). The roads to the lookout are not plowed, nor are they maintained for passenger cars. High clearance or four wheel drive vehicles are recommended for travel to this site, and guests must bring several of their own amenities. Please be aware that while very uncommon, during winter months guests may need to snowmobile, ski or snowshoe up to four miles to reach the lookout.

What Guests Are Saying

Pickett Butte Lookout offers a stunning and serene experience with beautiful views, especially at sunrise and sunset. The well-maintained forest roads make the approach easy, and the unique dumbwaiter adds convenience for transporting supplies. While the steep stairs can be challenging and the oven was out of service during some visits, the overall ambiance, local wildlife, and opportunities for adventure make it a highly recommended destination.

Beautiful views. Lookout was exactly as described. Everything was in great working condition. Being able to drive up to the lookout tower was convenient. Did a side trip to Crater Lake for snowshoeing which was fun. Looking forward to my next trip

It must have been one of the rare occasions mentioned for the winter, we were in winter wonderland. Snow hiked 3 miles on Rd 3113 then snowshoed 2 miles to the lookout on 300. With a high clearance vehicle with good stud tires, maybe you can go up till the split but there was knee deep snow.
Worth the hard work to get there though. Gorgeous view and very quiet. Stove and heater worked great and mattress was comfortable. Wish we had mor time. Love to come back anytime!

The lookout was awesome. Everything worked and the view was beautiful. The only bad thing was that despite the locked gate on the road, people still walked down to the lookout. One woman even walked up the stairs with my car right out front! I don’t know what is wrong with people, but if there’s a vehicle at a lookout GO AWAY!

So far (of two we’ve tried), this is our favorite Lookout. It’s way up there, gorgeous views, comfortable (not plasticy) mattress, and pretty much private for us to enjoy when we visit. We’re booking for a longer stretch on our next visit! Pro-tip: often there are small extras people leave behind, like hand towels, string lights, and cups. We took a dirty towel to wash and left useful item behind for the next people. Pay it forward!

I would like to commend the staff at the Tiller Ranger dist. on doing such a good job at maintaining the lookout. The lookout out is always in great shape and clean when ever we have been lucky enough to get a chance to spend the night in such a beautiful setting. We are not the only people that visit there that has noticed that this is an incredible outdoor experience and are thankful that this part of our public land is well taken care of and available to the public for our use in the off season. While the initial climb to the lookout is scary the first few times, it is well worth it! The views are outstanding, and the lookout is cozy and offers more amenities than many others in the PNW. We had a very comfortable, relaxing stay and our dog would’ve stayed forever.

{"text"=>"What a beautiful and peaceful location. Easy to get to (our AWD Volvo had no trouble at all), cozy, with outstanding views. The lookout itself has a pulley system to bring up gear, a propane heater, stove, small fridge, a full-sized bed platform & mattress, and a few cooking odds and ends left by visitors. Near the base is a fire pit, two picnic tables, and an outhouse.\n\nA few things to consider:\n\n1) The nights get very cold here (and the lookout provides little insulation thanks to the panoramic windows), so do be prepared for that.\n\n2) The nearest town with a \"real\" grocery store is Canyonville (we saw signs for a market near the turn-off for the lookout, but did not check it out).\n\n3) Cell reception in the lookout was good for us (using Google Fi).\n\n4) You need to drive through actively logged areas to get to the lookout (but these roads are in VERY good condition, even mid-winter).\n\nAll in all, highly recommended!", "languageCode"=>"en"}

Refunds are generally not given for inclement weather.
