About Crooked Creek Lake

Authorized by the Flood Control Acts of 1936 and 1938, Crooked Creek Lake is one of 16 flood control projects in the Pittsburgh District. An important link in a system of flood control projects, Crooked Creek provides flood protection for the lower Allegheny and Ohio rivers. The construction cost of over $4 million appears small when compared to the giant saving which have resulted. Since its completion in 1940, the project has prevented flood damages estimated to be in excess of $548 million. Crooked creek also stores water and releases it downstream during dry periods to improve water quality and quantity for domestic and industrial use, navigation, recreation, aesthetics and aquatic life.

Crooked Creek Lake offers a pleasant camping experience with clean facilities, helpful staff, and nearby wildlife, making it a great spot for outdoor enthusiasts. Fun, cheap, and relaxing! There are enough trails in the park to keep you busy for a day. But there are other nearby trails and such. I'm definitely going back!

Love Crooked Creek Campground. We've been camping there for 20years!! It's a nice clean campground with plenty of spots for campers and tents with lots of trees for shade. They have nice clean bathrooms, but no showers or electric hook-ups. Each spot has their own fire ring and table. There is a fairly new playground for kids too. There is a beach for swimming and a boat launch area as well. We always took our bikes because there are paved roads for riding.

Sites are pretty much level. Cell service is not what it used to be after changes to the cell towers but still serviceable. The bathrooms are very clean. Overall a good little campground.

No information at the campground about water or dumpstation or quiet hours made for our worst night of camping in a long time. During the week was okay but Friday night we needed to self enforce the rules which weren't posted. We checked out early to avoid a repeat. Most sites are too small and close even for our 20 foot camper. Upon leaving we had to call the ranger for the code to use the dumpstation. It was lucky we could reach someone. Also, it is unclear why there are no toilets in the beach area. This seems to me to be a problem. As for the scenic vistas shown on the map...maybe when there's no leaves on the trees. On a positive note, it is a short drive to the Rosston access to the Armstrong bike trail and kayaking up crooked creek from the boat launch you can see numerous blue herons and possibly a bald eagle as we did.
