Hosts were helpful and friendly. They kept the campground clean and bathrooms were very clean (it was really nice to have them cleaned everyday)!

Whitetail Campground is located above Deerfield Reservoir at 6 ft, an ideal setting for guests seeking summer climate relief, recreation and relaxation in Black Hills National Forest.
Sites in this campground are widely spaced. Several have lake views, while others are more secluded and tucked into ponderosa and lodgepole pine forest.

It was a great stay at Whitetail, the bathrooms were immaculate and the hosts were very nice. They came soon after we arrived and we felt welcomed. We will definitely stay again! The views from the campground are astounding!

While the facilities, quality of sites and space between them was great our most memorable part of our stay here were the hosts, Greg & Rhonda. Friendly and very helpful in providing area information which made our stay and the campground and area a most enjoyable experience and memory.

Whitetail is a very nice (fairly primative) campground. We've been there several times, it's always clean and quiet. Host(s) have always been friendly and helpful. We especially enjoy kayaking around Deerfield Lake. We usually see a few deer, many turtles sitting on rocks and logs along the lake shore, ducks, osprey, great blue herons, etc. Water is very clear, although the lake is quite weedy, probable pretty good fishing!

We enjoyed the spot but the bathrooms were limited and there was a huge group up at the top of the campground that were lined up to use the bathroom in the morning. We paid for three nights and only spent one night there as a result.

Getting There
From Hill City, take Deerfield Rd. (County Rt. 308/Forest Rt. 17) west for 15.1 mi to Whitetail Campground sign (Forest Rt.421). Turn right onto Rt. 421 and travel 0.9 mi to the campground.
Highway access
The nearest major road is US Highway 16, located approximately 17 miles east of the campground.

General
- These campsites are non-electric sites. Generators may run only.
- Non-reservable sites may be available on a first come, first served basis
- Prevent the spread of invasive species by inspecting and cleaning packs, equipment, and tires before using lake or trails
- A pet fee of $2 per pet per night is required upon check-in
- No refunds for inclement weather

- Don't Move Firewood: Prevent the spread of tree-killing organisms by obtaining firewood at or near your destination and burning it on-site. For more information visit dontmovefirewood.org.
- The Senior and Access discounts are only honored for the site that hoses the card holder. If multiple sites are reserved on one card, the rest of the camping fee will be collected upon arrival unless another card holder occupies the site.
- During walk up season, fewer sites may be available.
