About Cottonwood (big Bend, Tx)

Cottonwood Campground is a quiet desert oasis in the southwestern corner of Big Bend National Park. Conveniently located between the Castolon Historic District, the scenic Santa Elena Canyon and the tail end of the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, this small, 30-site campground is one of the least-known and quiet campgrounds in the park. There is one group campsite and 30 individual sites. This is a remote campground in a remote park. It is dry camping, no hook-ups, and no generators are permitted. There is not a fill or dump station, please come prepared. Cottonwood gets its name from the cottonwood trees that surround and provide shade for the facility nearby the Rio Grande. A general store and visitor center -- a converted former military outpost -- are also nearby. The campground is at an elevation of 1,900 ft. (580 m). It is relatively cool in the peak seasons of fall and winter due to cold air sinking into the lower elevations. In the spring and summer, this campground is very hot, with temperatures normally exceeding 100° F (38° C) from mid-March through August.

Small campground that gives great access to explore the east side of the park. I was in site 17. Large site, but next to group camping, so there may be large groups there. The noise and light was to be expected from my neighbors in the group site, but it was easy to walk around the campground and find a place to enjoy the stars. Like all NP campgrounds, they are sold out and 1/2 the campsites are empty.

Un lugar muy natural. No cuenta con ningun servicios, mas que unas canillas con agua no potable...hay unos baños secos.... Si vas en carpa, lleva todo lo posible menos mesa y sillas....el lugar es muy lindo pero carente....

We liked the cost and location to trails and Santa Elena Canyon. However it was a bit cramped when full. Also we arrived on a Friday and a sign said full but it appeared 60% full. Needs to be good system to handle no shows and allow a hybrid of First come First served. Overall not a bad site but next trip want to experience the other campgrounds

It is an absolute outrage that something as simple as spending the night in a Public Campground requires anything more than choosing a site and dropping a few bucks in a lock box. The Nanny State control freak Fascists demanding 1) computer 2) internet 3) credit card 4) personal ID 5) Further personal ID ( license plate) - That makes SIX! Is the epitomy of an Orwellian police state in utter contempt of the Forth Amendment of our American Blll of Rights, and the polar opposite of brief respite from our sick excuse for culture in the eternal state of nature. Nice job, Comrades!

The site was a last minute grab, as I had ridden out to BBNP without a reservation in hopes that one would open up, which it did. Cottonwood is so peaceful and the stars were amazing.
