About Cottonwood (big Bend, Tx)

Cottonwood Campground is a quiet desert oasis in the southwestern corner of Big Bend National Park. Conveniently located between the Castolon Historic District, the scenic Santa Elena Canyon and the tail end of the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive, this small, 30-site campground is one of the least-known and quiet campgrounds in the park. There is one group campsite and 30 individual sites. This is a remote campground in a remote park. It is dry camping, no hook-ups, and no generators are permitted. There is not a fill or dump station, please come prepared. Cottonwood gets its name from the cottonwood trees that surround and provide shade for the facility nearby the Rio Grande. A general store and visitor center -- a converted former military outpost -- are also nearby. The campground is at an elevation of 1,900 ft. (580 m). It is relatively cool in the peak seasons of fall and winter due to cold air sinking into the lower elevations. In the spring and summer, this campground is very hot, with temperatures normally exceeding 100° F (38° C) from mid-March through August.

Great campground on the banks of the Rio. It actually has grass to pad the ground when in a tent. A heard of javelinas came through in the evening as well as a group of wild horses with a lone donkey. If I make it to big bend again I would definitely stay in Cottonwood.

Spacious campsites and beautiful location. Definitely recommend talking to the people at the very close Visitor Centre for things to do.

The campground was clean. Nice to have a few trees. We are self contained in our RV so the pit toilets were not an issue. I checked them out and they were clean and well kept. My only gripe is the no generator running and no engine running rule. The campground is beside the road so car traffic noise is there regardless. What's the point?

I loved my stay at Cottonwood Campground. It was so nice to disconnect - and it was nice to be away from electricity but close enough to amenities like the small store. I heard the owls at night and little javalenas snorted around the campground eating mesquite pods. I can't wait to go back!

Campsites in the middle loop are too close, quiet hours not enforced. Toilets were clean and well maintained. Nearby camp store in Castolon was convenient.

Campground was nice. The camp host was very friendly. Just across the river from Mexico so that's kinda cool. Worth a stay!

Good backup when you can't get a campsite in the Chisos Basin. Good viewpoint of Cerro Castellan and easy to get to Santa Elena Canyon. Be wary of flooding and wildlife on the scenic drive in this part of the park.

Beautiful campground right by the Rio Grande. I’ve stayed here twice, and loved it both times!
