About Rio Grande Village (big Bend, TX)

The Rio Grande Village Campground sits near the banks of the Rio Grande, the International Boundary between the United States and Mexico. It is one of the most popular campgrounds in Big Bend National Park, especially for those traveling in large recreational vehicles. It is located close to Boquillas Canyon and Hot Springs, and serves as a launch point for visitors accessing the river or the endless miles of backcountry roads. We just camped at Big Bend National Park, and honestly, it exceeded what we expected. The first thing that hit us was how big everything feels. You’ll be driving for a while and think you’re getting close to something, and you’re… not. The sky feels oversized. The mountains look layered and dusty and endless. At night it gets so quiet that you can actually hear your own footsteps on the gravel. We did several of the natural trails and loved them. They aren’t overly groomed or built up. You’re walking on rock and sand and uneven ground, sometimes climbing a little, sometimes just wandering through desert brush with views opening up in front of you. It felt like exploring instead of “doing a tourist hike.” We kept stopping just to look around. The hot springs were one of our favorite parts. Sitting in warm mineral water right along the Rio Grande, looking out across the river toward Mexico, is kind of surreal. We were disappointed to find the main trail officially closed, which felt like a letdown at first. But we carefully walked in anyway and were really glad we did. Once you’re in the water, watching the light shift on the canyon walls, you forget about the minor hassle of getting there. What really made the trip, though, were the people. We met some genuinely interesting fellow campers and hikers — the kind of casual trail conversations that turn into 20-minute chats about where you’ve all been and where you’re headed next. And every ranger and park employee we talked to was friendly and helpful. They answered questions without rushing us, gave thoughtful suggestions, and seemed like they actually enjoyed working there. Big Bend is remote, a rugged, and you have to be prepared. But if you like space, quiet, big landscapes, and the feeling of being somewhere that hasn’t been overly packaged, it’s an incredible place to camp. We’d absolutely go back.

First time here. Drove from Alpine which is a nothing of a town and it took 2 hours to get to the entrance and another 30 minutes to the main office and another 30 to get to our CG. Desolate doesn't begin to describe it.
I have a lifetime military pass so we didn't have to pay an entry fee. So it was just $16 a night for dry-camping. There is no check-in procedure or booth. Once you're in the park just drive to the CG and if your space is open you can just set up camp.
Sites are nearby one another. In the middle of the CG there are some trees but no privacy between sites. Though you get pretty good solar in those sites. Around the edges of the CG the sites are more wooded and offer privacy between sites but limited solar. There is a 'no-generator' loop but has lots of trees and you won't get much solar. Most everyone else has a generator. There are some pull-thru sites around the edge but they are very tight turns. We are 30ft and had to back into our site. We were lucky in that we had open sky and got great solar and satellite. Most sites have picnic tables, bear boxes and ramadas. The bathrooms were clean, sinks and flush toilets, no hot water. Plus there was a dish-washing sink.

This is an old ranch and there are irrigation channels with wooden boards. Water comes in from the river and these channels are used for irrigation. When we were here they had just flooded the CG to water the trees. So watch where you pitch a tent.
A short walk from the CG there is a small camp store. Nothing fresh. Camping essentials and frozen food including ice cream, burritos and pizza. There technically is a laundry room but only one washer and one dryer are working. Showers are $2 for 5 minutes. They offer wi-fi, and gasoline. We walked down past the FHU loop to an old homestead. Found some burros. One had his front legs tied together and all he could do is hop. So I untied him. I think they wandered across the river from Mexico. We love desert camping but this place is so remote.

Love Big Bend. Facilities are showing their age. Park staff and store staff at Panther Junction can be very rude. That’s not the case in Rio Grande Village.

This was the 3rd or 4th time we stay at Rio Grande Village. There are paid showers and laundry at store and propane and fuel available. We went to Boquillas and did some of the local hiking trails.

Overall a fine campground, there were lots of birds around the first afternoon, bathrooms were clean, camp hosts friendly and available. The reason for my less than stellar rating was the presence, every day, of a camper’s generator that ran steadily between 8:00 am and 8:00 pm. All day, every day, complete with gas fumes. And it was REALLY LOUD! It sort of ruined the experience and remains a salient memory of my time there. Other generators were on intermittently, but they were much quieter. Too bad :-(
