I'm a GS13 Forest Service employee. Seven (yes that's his name) who is stationed at Dog Canyon is outstanding! Very personable and was great to sit and talk to after 3 days on the trail in the backcountry. Great asset!

Nice quiet campground with only a few people around in early January. The hiking trails from the campground are top notch. The wifi worked good. The campground is very dark at night as lighting is kept to the bare minimum. I've never seen so many stars.

Excellent but remote campsites as it takes 80 minutes to get to the main road by one of two routes. The sites are very clean and have sand pads which make it easy to install tents in a windy region of the park. It is a short walk from the camping site to two community parking lots and you have to carry camping equipment a short distance from the car to the site. The bathrooms at the ranger station and in the campground for such a remote location are very modern and clean. Bring body wipes as there are no showers anywhere in Dog Canyon.

This campground is way out there and I am surprised it even exists and has WiFi! Hygiene facility (toilet) that I used was extremely clean and heated. One of the roads to this place is called Dark Canyon Road, but should be renamed Dark Canyon Shooting Range as almost every yellow diamond traffic sign on the road has more than 6 bullet holes in it.

Site 8 has a beautiful view of the canyon side! It’s conveniently close to the car park but you don’t feel like you are in the parking lot. Other camp sites are very close but that was okay. The drive in is BEAUTIFUL! The bathroom is HEATED. No showers.
Hiking is available right from the parking lot.
Recommend driving 5 vista road.

Somehow I, as a visitor, lucked out being the lone camper at Dog Canyon that evening. Enjoyed a short wilderness hike, an amazingly quiet and dark (lotsa stars) evening, and next morning watched a stag and his seven does wander about quite closely to my site. Quite the humbling experience, actually. In the morning I had a very nice chat with one of the rangers who agrees with me that this is quite a special place. It is worth the long drive from the main Visitor's Center for the Park.
