What Guests Are Saying

Split Mountain Group Campground offers a scenic landscape with beautiful surroundings, abundant wildlife, and access to recreational activities like hiking and river play. While the sites along the river may not be ideal for tents due to heat and sun exposure, the campground provides clean facilities and a friendly atmosphere. Group arrangements can be less than ideal for communal gatherings, but the amenities and overall beauty of the area make it a worthwhile destination for those planning outdoor adventures.

We had a great time at this campground and were very pleased with how scenic and beautiful landscape was. Saw lots of the wildlife and played in the river.

The sites along the river are not suitable for tents. They get full sun for 12 hours per day. It was brutally hot. When I looked at the pictures of the site I thought because of the trees there would be shade, but there is thick brush under the trees (good for birding - there were some interesting birds here). Access to the river is unofficial and very muddy. These sites are clearly intended for RVs. Like most camping areas no one really put any thought into tent sites. The sites in the middle of the campground do have some shade during the day, but the only access to the river from those sites is constantly clogged with professional rafting companies, so there is limited opportunities for casual recreation. If you like camping this is not a place for you. If you need a base camp with access to cool and interesting places, you will probably like this place. As long as you plan to be up and out by 9 am at the latest to avoid the heat.

There was too much sun and water. The waves were too splashy and we were constantly having to stretch out to dry off after the waves washed over the bow. Would not recommend. Stay away!!!!!

Our group site, D, was splity into three parts, each with a separate driveway and separated from the others by foliage. In each area, there was room for a handful of tents. This setup is less than ideal for a group, since we had to select one area for communal gathering and spread our tents over all the sites. Either each area should be a separate site for a small group - maybe 4 - 6 tents - or the foliage should be trimmed so that it functions as more of a single, large site.
The area was clean, but the tables in each area were so heavy as to be immovable. Again, this is inconvenient: the tables should be able to be moved modest distances within each area. Consider putting them on a 10 foot chain or something.
The rest rooms were clean and adequate. In the men's room, we particularly appreciated having more stalls than urinals. This is the right proportion; most facilities have it backwards with more urinals than stalls.
There were use trails allowing river access, which was nice.

Sites were very nice, bathrooms were clean, shuttles ran great. Out only disappointment was we were there late July and it was 100+, so we couldn't explore as much as we wanted. But that's our poor planning, not the park. Beautiful scenery, hope to come back and complete The Narrows trail!

We planned a family group camping weekend July 26-29, 2024. Our expectation was that we would all be in one campground. Group Campsite C was actually 3 campgrounds and one was across the little road. We were much more spread out than we hoped to be. We made it work but were disappointed that we couldn't be closer. Most of us were in tents and one family group was in a pulled camper trailer. We did not plan to raft down the river but there was another large group that came to raft multiple days. They set their tents up close to our camping area then complained when the adults in our group were softly talking at night away from our sleeping children. The campsite tables are sturdy and there are plenty of very heavy tables. There is one fire pit per campsite, Group C has 3 campsites. We set 2 canopies over tables to create additional shade but the wind wrecked them. Two of the campsites in Group C had plenty of shade but the one across the road had very little shade. The bathrooms could have been cleaned more regularly. There were flushing toilets. There is a spigot and drinking fountain outside of the bathrooms to rinse feet off. The surroundings were beautiful. The river is a bit muddy but we played in the water. The river bank near the campsite is rocky and sloped but we made it work. The next day we moved to the sandy beach near the boat ramp. It is also sloped but the kids liked digging in the sand. Some people in our group floated down the river a few times, not far. It's not too deep but the water is more swift in the middle of the river. They liked it. We went to the Dinosaur Quarry hiking up to the quarry then taking the shuttle down. The next day we went to the homestead and hiked in the box canyon. The kids liked the house a lot. We let them play in the area. We enjoyed our family time but will probably not go back to this campground.

Great campsite, but this is a Dark Sky park and the campground hosts both had light ropes under their RV’s that lit up the entire campground and made stargazing with a telescope less than optimal.

Pretty nice group campground. The pullouts are a bit small, had a little trouble getting our 22’ trailer where we wanted it. Really nice “beach” on the river just past the boat ramp.

The sites are large with lovely large, mature cottonwood trees for shade. The bathrooms are exceptionally clean with running water, power, and flush toilets. The star gazing here is magical.
