What Guests Are Saying
Sand Island Group Sites offers a beautiful and spacious camping experience, with convenient amenities like potable water and a close proximity to the boat launch. Many visitors appreciate the friendly atmosphere among boaters and the helpful BLM rangers. While some concerns were raised about noise from locals and restroom accessibility, overall, campers look forward to returning for future river trips.

We got lucky that the temperature was moderated by clouds and rain, and the river level was 1020 cfs when we launched. The BLM rangers were very helpful for changes in campsites, and did a phone call check in of our group

Great space. Off from the boat ramp and other campers , felt a little secluded. However, cats coming down shined lights right into the camp site. We were there for the eclipse so we probably had more traffic than normal. FYI, people leave their cars for shuttling boats, so bring ear plugs just in case.

The site is spacious with several picnic tables and room to roam. It isn't next to the river, but connects to the river's main access to the east via a few trails through the sage.

it was easy to find and had what we needed to get ready to float the san juan. the only thing it might need is a bigger sunshade/ picnic area

A bit buggy, but not surprising given the riverside campsite. Overall, great campsite.

The Ranger was extremely nice, competent and made sure we knew what to possibly expect down river with the water running so high. Camp sites are very clean with water at the site. The out house was clean with toilet paper, however always bring your own.

We love Sand Island for pre-trip camping! Petroglyphs to re-visit, easy access to the boat ramp for rigging and packing, and always well-maintained toilet systems! Camps are spacious and well-kept.

Very good site for a group getting ready to launch on the San Juan. It is set back a little from the entry road so less traffic at night. However, the highway noise (trucks) is still prominent at this site. Toilet is convenient to this site, many level tent spaces and a good pavilion. There are petroglyphs upstream of this site; you simply walk east past the ranger/volunteer station and through those camp sites and take the trail that winds up river, about a mile. Glyphs are up on the wall

Clean campground with plenty of room in the group site for our party, Group camp A was a short walk from the boat ramp
