What Guests Are Saying
Sand Island Group Sites offers a beautiful and spacious camping experience, with convenient amenities like potable water and a close proximity to the boat launch. Many visitors appreciate the friendly atmosphere among boaters and the helpful BLM rangers. While some concerns were raised about noise from locals and restroom accessibility, overall, campers look forward to returning for future river trips.

Upon our arrival, a homeless man was set up in our reserved camp. After some coaxing and showing him paper proof and site billboard truth, he retreated 50’ away under a tree. Did not feel comfortable (woman w/2 kids) until the rest of our group arrived. Also, there is a public restroom facility but a lot of first come first serve sites came at all hours to use the facilities. Tried to chat on rec.gov app but kept ending my conversation because too much time elapsed between my interaction and them reaching out

Sand Island is the perfect spot to camp the night before a rafting trip. Convenient to launch, clean and flat.
I've never stayed longer than a night because I was always rafting next day.

Group B camp site was very well appointed with some nice shade. Toilets were well kept. Ramp was easy and not crowded for an afternoon rig. The parking however was crowded, which was a precursor to a crowded upper San Juan. Finding camps between Sand Island and Mexican Hat was difficult.

Group site #1 is the closest access to the boat ramp. Easy to work from this site and the river access ramp to get your rafts pumped up and loaded.

Fully understand covid times, but we had to pick up trash in the site from previous campers.. there was no toilet paper in any of the outhouses...
