About Red Cliffs Campground

Red Cliffs Recreation Area includes a campground, day use areas, a non-motorized trail system, and interpreted public use sites. Dinosaurs left their footprints, now visible in the sandstone. Ancestral Puebloans lived here in the 10th century, growing corn, beans, and squash along Quail and Leeds Creek. Mid-19th century pioneers farmed here, supplying the area’s silver miners with food. Located within the Red Cliffs National Conservation Area, the Recreation Area is managed to conserve and protect the natural and cultural resources of the public lands.

Red Cliffs has sites listed as available for RVs. However, as we followed directions to the campground, we approached an underpass (under Interstate 15) which had a height limit of less than 12 feet. This was too low for our RV, and I suspect most RVs. I was informed by locals that there was no alternative route to reach the campground. I had made and paid for my 2 nights reserved RV site months before in order to assure a space. Thankfully, my wife noticed the height restriction at the tunnel just before I was about to enter. I went back on the rec.gov website the next day to see why I hadn't noticed this tunnel height restriction. I noticed a very small "alert" (but no exclamation marks or bold, large font) which did in fact warn of the height limit. I would appreciate a refund for my two nights ($36). More importantly, rec.gov should make such alerts and warning more obvious. From then on I checked all the alerts on other campgrounds which I had either reserved or was considering. All the other alerts referred to possible slow conditions due to road work, or something else which wasn't a "deal breaker". No problem there, but this height restriction should be printed out in bold, red letters.
Other than this problem, my rec.gov experience has been great.

The campgrounds were great, but I had booked 2 sites, however when we got there one of the sites was occupied. The people were already asleep and we weren’t able to occupy both of the campgrounds I had.

105 degrees when I arrived. Wow. Parking spot not flat, making it difficult to setup for sleeping inside.

This is a beautiful campground tucked away in the red rocks. This site in particular sees a lot of foot traffic right behind the tent pad area due to its proximity to the dinosaur track trail. The shade covering is wonderful during the heat of the day but in the evening when everyone goes home for the night the campground is very quiet and peaceful.

Wow! Such an amazing experience at Red Cliffs! This site in particular is tent only and I LOVED it. Pretty secluded from the rest of the campground, loved that I had my our little gazebo. A short jaunt from the pit toilets but it’s a lovely walk! Definitely my new favorite campsite.
