This is a beautiful, high mountain campground. Large trailers are limited on sites that will accommodate, but there are a few. The camp hosts, Don and Pam, are new to this campground this season, and they are wonderful! Very friendly and helpful. We’re hoping to find them hosting at Monte Cristo next summer!

We have been camping at Monte Cristo for over 20 years & usually stay a full week. It is one of our favorite campgrounds & it's beautiful. There are pine trees particularly in loops D & E and the group sites. It's not good for large trailers. There are tight turns with overhanging trees that could damage large (and tall) trailers. We have a 29' fifth wheel & about 1/3 of the sites in loops D & E will accomodate us. Loop D has the tightest turns & depending on how the trees are trimmed that year, we can't always get into that loop. (We always walk the loops & check before we drive our trailer in.) Loops A, B, & C are really designed for tents or very small trailers.

It's great that the sites are by reservation now. However, the last several years have been a challenge. The campground host, Lynn, seems to have two personalities. Sometimes he is very nice/helpful. Other times, he is outright over-the-top rude/abrasive. He was so blatently rude to my sweet aunt that she begged him to stop yelling at her & to talk to her like a human being. He apologized & said he was having a bad day - not an excuse IMO. I realize that part of his job is to educate about/enforce rules. My aunt didn't know that you now cannot fill trailer water at the campground (as we have done for the past 20 years & didn't know the policy had changed.) And on another occasion, he actually yelled at us when he saw we have a toy hauler - saying that we better not think of setting our ATVs down on his roads. We didn't even bring ATVs with us to this campground because we know they are not allowed. But he assumed & obnoxiously proceeded to lecture us about it without even asking if we had any with us. And then, later that day, he stopped by our campsite & was delightfully pleasant. Also, we're not certain, but prior to the sites being by reservation, we're pretty sure he was saving good ones for his family/friends. He said it's his last year (in 2020) so hopefully they find someone more pleasant.

Beautiful place to camp and camp sites are good, but the road through the sites needs to be widened. I scraped the side of my trailer with a pine tree that should have been cut down. There are other trees along the road that should be cut down as well.

The so-called campsite was not a site at all. It was merely a narrow shoulder off the road. The photo listed on the website was of the firepit and table so it conveniently didn't show there was no where to put a small camper on a truck even. The camp host was a nightmare as well. Even though the place was rained out and it was a very slow Tuesday and Wednesday, he refused to allow me to move to a site that was empty but was an actual campsite. He also refused to let me move to two separate sites which had already been paid for by members in my party who were leaving early who had asked if I wanted to use one of them. Luckily, this host, Lynn, will be gone next year so wait to plan your trip then.
In the meantime, make sure you get a good look at ALL of your campsite before booking because this was a nightmare. DON'T book site #33 road shoulder.

Beautiful campsites amongst aspen and spruce trees. Most campsites are very private within walking distance to the restrooms. Online reservation was no problem, however based on the online map I did not know where the campsites are located. So I took a photo of the map posted by the camp host at the campground and created this document:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1HOkG2V2-iKTdXp7VF6uEk3Qphjc3xFNP/view?usp=sharing

or

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1p_6xcjZlv5a84-fo8H4TXVFC4ETQbI2H/view?usp=sharing

I hope it helps you to find your perfect site. I stayed at site Loop A Site 1 and LOVED it.

Our time at Monte Cristo was peaceful and beautiful. We took a walk through each of the loops and saw beautiful wildflowers and scenery! We drove on some of the roads just outside the campground and found more beautiful views.
