About Cougar Rock Campground

Cougar Rock Campground, on the southwest side of Mt. Rainier National Park, is conveniently located near Paradise. Individual campsites are reservable on this page. Group campsite reservations can be made via Cougar Rock Group Campground.  Paradise is the most popular destination in the park, with a lodge and visitor center, many miles of hiking trails and a commanding view of the mountain-the highest in the state and Cascade range. The main attraction at Mount Rainier National Park is the mountain itself, a massive glacier-clad volcano, peaking at 14.4 ft. and dominating the skyline for hundreds of miles. Visitors travel through majestic old-growth forests, past tumbling waterfalls and historic buildings to reach sub-alpine meadows, where world-famous wildflower displays bloom through July and August. Popular activities in the park include sight-seeing, hiking, rock climbing and camping. Cougar Rock campground is located at an elevation of 3.2 ft. Summers are dry and cool with daytime temperatures ranging from 60 to 80 degrees. Weather throughout the park can be variable, so visitors should come prepared.

Frustrated that there was no dump site and not noted ahead of time and the bathrooms left a lot to be desired

Our campsite was fairly private and quiet. We had a picnic table, fire ring and bear box. They kept the bathroom clean. The whole area is so beautiful. I would definitely stay there again.

Very nice campground. Lots of sites but still feels very private as there are lots of trees between each site. It's nice to have a place to park an RV and a flat spot for a tent or a kitchen area. Nice bathrooms. Easy walk to trails and access to both paradise and Longmire. Only issue is firewood. They state that firewood should come from no more than 50 mi away which is completely understandable. However the firewood avilable for sale at Longmire is $15 per bundle. They had one bundle available and it had 5 pieces in it. Small pieces....So each small piece of wood was $3. Yet, they are in the process of thining the diseased trees around the campground and there are hundreds of downed trees. Needless to say people have been taking wood from these. When you make something prohibitively expensive you encourage people to use other resources.

My husband and I camped at site C15 and enjoyed our time there. It’s a partially shaded site at the end of the loop, so there’s decent privacy. This particular site is better for an RV/camper as it has a spacious pull through driveway. We were tent camping and could only find one small area that was level enough for our tent. We walked around the other loops and it seems Loop D has more sites with true tent pads.

Bathrooms were well-maintained and clean. There is good garbage disposal and recycling for select items. Any staff we interacted with was very friendly. Location is great in terms up getting up to Paradise and other big sights. No cell reception for Verizon or T-Mobile, but we were able to get service by Paradise Inn.

Firewood is only sold at Longmire general store and it’s a bit pricey ($15 a bundle). I’d recommend buying firewood from somewhere nearby to get better bang for your buck.
