About Cougar Rock Campground

Cougar Rock Campground, on the southwest side of Mt. Rainier National Park, is conveniently located near Paradise. Individual campsites are reservable on this page. Group campsite reservations can be made via Cougar Rock Group Campground.  Paradise is the most popular destination in the park, with a lodge and visitor center, many miles of hiking trails and a commanding view of the mountain-the highest in the state and Cascade range. The main attraction at Mount Rainier National Park is the mountain itself, a massive glacier-clad volcano, peaking at 14.4 ft. and dominating the skyline for hundreds of miles. Visitors travel through majestic old-growth forests, past tumbling waterfalls and historic buildings to reach sub-alpine meadows, where world-famous wildflower displays bloom through July and August. Popular activities in the park include sight-seeing, hiking, rock climbing and camping. Cougar Rock campground is located at an elevation of 3.2 ft. Summers are dry and cool with daytime temperatures ranging from 60 to 80 degrees. Weather throughout the park can be variable, so visitors should come prepared.

lovely foresty campground on the southwest side of the park! we were able to snag a spot via rec.gov the night prior. our spot (D36) was a bit small, but fit our 19 ft van (any bigger would have been tight) and we were able to string up a hammock. we walked around all the loops with our dog, it’s a huge campground with many lovely spots, ranging all different sizes. first come first serve might have provided us a cooler spot, but we were a cross from the clean bathrooms, there is potable water available, and it was quiet, so we can’t complain!

The campsite is pretty small. It barely fit my 3man tent. If you have a bigger tent, it would definitely not fit - at least in my site.

Hot & dry, pray for rain. Lot’s of maintenance backlog, numerous sites are closed due to hazard trees needing to be removed. Limited staff, bathrooms ok but the one in A/B loop was always overly busy, I think the one on the next loop over may have been out of service. Interaction with NPS staff always positive but hey, let’s get this park some money to take care of the place! This is America’s 5th oldest NP.

Very nice site - on the larger side. We had a 4-person tent and it was easy to set up in the space. Wished we had brought our hammock, plenty of trees to hold it. Fire pit but no bear-box for food storage. We had to cross another site to go to the bathroom a bit downhill. Garbage boxes near the bathroom but away enough from site. easy enough as the site was not occupied. no mosquitoes on the 4th of July weekend. beautiful hikes around. Will be back.

Campground was clean, private and ready. It was in of the most beautiful forests I have ever seen. We loved our experience. Restrooms were clean and well cared for. Thank you Rainier NPS!
