What Guests Are Saying
Halfway Flat Campground offers a serene riverside experience with good access to Mt. Rainier's Sunrise area, and affordable rates at $10 per night. Campers can enjoy a clean environment, spacious sites, and minimal noise from the lightly traveled highway. While some visitors encountered noise from inconsiderate neighbors and noted rough access roads, the overall atmosphere is peaceful, especially with the calming sound of the flowing river.

Great Campground along the river. Close to the highway but is very lightly traveled at night. Good access to Mt Rainier Sunrise area.

The campground was nice. The campers next to us, not so courteous. Blasted their music all day and till 3:00 am when we finally told them to turn it off. We left the next morning.

Clean campground. 10.00 per night. Three sites are first come. Large garbage cans. A mile or so of gravel to camp. River is within 100’ of each site.
UPDATE.
Stayed here two nights in mid June 2025. Windy from 9am-9pm. Good news is that this blows most of the flying bugs away. River flows fast and steady this time of year. Makes for great background noise at night. Showed up on a Wednesday, had the campground to ourselves. Everything is as mentioned above two years ago. The fee is still only 10.00, 5.00 with the interagency pass.

First time off grid in my 2018 Winnebago Travato 59g. The trip from Seattle was just about 3 hours.
Here’s the 411 on the trip:
- 2-nights, after taxes it worked out to be $54.00 dollars or $27.00 per night
I- stayed in site 4 and it was a pull through with no hookups at all. In fact there are no connections to water, electric or sewer
- There was no cell service. I have AT&T.
- The facilities: The campground consists of a total of 8 sites overall with 5 of the sites available to reserve in advance between Memorial Day & Labor Day, after that everything is first come first serve. There is a potable water pump in the campground, but you have to pump the water into something.
I was easily able to book my reservation online at: https://www.recreation.gov/

We love this campground, the road is a bit rough to get back into it, but it’s well spread out and so peaceful!

We have camped at several of the campgrounds in this area going out toward Chinook Pass. Halfway Flat was the worst of them! Road is only wide enough for one vehicle at a time and going around the turns you really take your chances that something is not coming the other way! There are a few wide spots to pull over but if you have an RV or pulling a trailer there is not enough room and you are taking your chances.
Also there is a section of the road where it looks like there was a rock slide down over the road and they tried to clear it up some but left it very narrow and the rocks are very sharp - sliced one of our tires on the sidewall! Very costly to replace tires these days.
Once we did get to our campsite it was ALL just fine silty dirt. By the time we left it was in everything! Usually there is at least some field grass or stubble of some kind but this was terrible - just all dirt! We won't be going back to this campground.

Loved it here! Only 2 negatives were no toilet paper in toilet and the water I pumped from the well was tan. It didn't look like it was drinkable, but I had my own supplies on both issues so they weren't a problem, just an FYI.

We reserved a beautiful spot by the river. We stayed for 3 days. On the second day the wind was unbearable, we could see the road and cars from the spot and the bathrooms got no attention, the boys had to use the women’s but they were both pretty bad. But it is a beautiful spot. We will try another campsite next time. Oh and Boulder Cave was closed. 😢

Wonderful sites with plenty of room. There is lots of shade and lots of access to the river. The bathrooms (long drops) were the cleanest I've ever seen at a primitive campsite.
