About Ohanapecosh Campground

Ohanapecosh Campground, on the southeast side of Mount Rainier National Park, is surrounded by old growth forest and crossed by an exceptionally beautiful snow-fed river. Close to Ohanapecosh are popular hikes to Silver Falls. The Grove of the Patriarchs trail is closed to public access until the bridge accessing the Grove is replaced. The main attraction at Mount Rainier National Park is the mountain itself, a glacier-clad volcano of immense proportions. At 14,411 ft., it dominates the skyline for hundreds of miles. Visitors travel through majestic old-growth forests, past tumbling waterfalls and historic buildings to reach sub-alpine meadows, where world-famous wildflower displays are seen in July and August. Popular activities in the park include sight-seeing, hiking, climbing and camping. Ohanapecosh campground has an elevation of 1,914 feet. Weather is dry, cool and sunny in the summer with daytime temperatures in the 60 to 80-degree range. Even though the eastern side of the park can be sunnier than other areas, weather can be variable and visitors should come prepared.

A good stay. Five days, four nights. Booked back in February. With La Wis Wis closed this season, my choices were super slim. In hindsight, only A, B, and C loops were open at Ohanapecosh. Grounds crews sawed up fallen trees across the bridge. I waited around for the firewood guy, but gave up on him. Went into Packwood three times, for a total bundle count of 23 bundles. Early June is chilly, 40-50⁰ at night. Not much animal sightings. A couple chipmunks, a crow, two camp robber birds, a robbin, and a finch. There are bear boxes here, so bears do exist. Flushing toilets, and running water sinks. No showers. No campground hosts, but a Visitor Center, with actual Park Ranger, junior ranger uniform staff. Very friendly.

Beautiful, heavily wooded campground with great hikes starting from there. Don’t miss Silver Falls! The park staff was super nice and helpful . Do be aware that despite the listed lengths for sites, it may be very difficult, if not impossible, to back your rig in. I had to swap out sites. Loop A has more larger and easier to maneuver sites than C.

Disappointed that the visitor's center was still not open a week after Memorial Day. It's alwasy a nice part of our expeience over the seven years in a row that we have been there. Please find a way to gather enough staff in the future. We need our parks running well.

Also the staff person at the window had no valuabble info, and acted disinterested. It was a young lady.

Our campsite was surrounded by RVs with generators going off most of our stay. Not the best choice when you have a tent and want to enjoy the view. The hike to the waterfall and the easy access to the river from the campsite was great.
