Walupt Lake was delightfully beautiful and serene. The water was cold and clear and the views from the lake are picturesque. We arrived in the rain which made the mosquitoes at the site quite bad but they were nonexistent at the lake. Our friends attempted the hike but turned around after two miles because the mosquitoes were unbearable. Bring bug repellent!
The camp sites are quite large and very shaded. It was much warmer by the lake. I felt like there was a lot of privacy between sites compared to others we’ve been to. The bathrooms were very clean but there was no available water. The camp host did have firewood.
The forest road in is 20 miles long but takes about an hour if you are pulling a camper- lots of washboard and deadly potholes. Take it easy and go slow!

Do not use the directions in Rec.gov or Allstays if towing a trailer or driving a large rv. Use the directions on the Forest Service website. Taking FD21 from Packwood is steep, washboarded, potholed, and dusty. The way in from Randel is mostly paved and the dirt section is in good shape. (About 8 miles of dirt)
The campground is older but is in a nice location. The water system was only working on a limited basis during our stay. Bring extra water as a backup. The outhouse receives a lot of use since it is shared with the large numbers of day use visitors.
Walupt Lake is beautiful with some fine hiking available. The beach can get crowded, but the swimming is refreshing!
