Snow Peak Cabin

Snow Peak Cabin is a cozy if rustic experience. Lots of wood to keep you warm, propane on a nice 2-burner stove to cook with adequate kitchen pots, pans, utensils (though no dishwashing buckets or anything like that.) Some matches and a lighter were there too. Be sure that you are very well prepared to navigate there and potentially break trail the entire 5 miles. The trail may not be very obvious - we have noticed on our various trips there that prevailing winds blow snow over the trail and the orange poles, blazes and flagging can be concealed by snow or in fact not even be there further in! Be aware as well of avalanche terrain and cross those large open slopes in the final 2-ish miles very carefully (we did so 1 person at a time.) In 2021 we observed the classic warning signs of avalanche hazard: shooting cracks and the whoompf sound on slopes near the trail within a mile of the cabin. Enjoy the solitude and beauty of this special place!

The cabin is cozy and comes loaded with 4 cots, a wood burning stove, propane cook top, lights, and plenty of cooking utensils to help keep your pack light for your trek. You gotta pull on the door pretty good to get it open, took me a few tries the first time. Unfortunately my car was broken into at the Kettle Crest parking lot on the top of Sherman's Pass which really sucked to drive back across the pass. Be sure to take your wallet and don't leave any valuables in your car!

For the hike in, the new snows had bent many young trees, and a few large ones, across the trail. It made the going tough. For the hike down, we met the trail crew coming up about half way thru the section of blocked trail. They had cleared all the smaller trees on their way up. That made our travel much easier. The cabin was so welcome and comfortable. All the gear provided in the cabin was surprising. We felt guilty over the level of comfort. I'm grateful for the wonderful stay we had. We filtered water from the horse trough rather than melting snow. No rodent activity was noticed in the cabin. No shortage of anything.

My Wife and I, with our four children and a dog fit quite comfortably(cozy, but comfortable). We were pleasantly surprised by how well stocked the cabin was, with firewood for the stove, propane for the cook stove, cookware and dishes, cots with mats and even a box of games to play. The privy is well taken care of and clean. We only found out about the cabin the day we started our hike and were lucky enough that it was available for that evening, but we really had no idea what to expect, what an epic blessing it was. We will definitely be back.

I have hiked this area many times in just about every condition, but this was the most challenging. The weather was nice, but the mixture of mud, snow and ice made for some dicey sections. We chose not to bring snow shoes, which ended up being a good choice as we would have had to take them on and off many times. However, the were many post holing incidents on the way up and down.
The cabin was awesome and left clean inside from the previous visitors - we did the same. Melting snow reveled aluminum and tin cans that were used for target practice - we packed what we could find, but I'm sure there is more to be uncovered.
